Build Your Experience. Work Toward Your 3rd Class.
Durham Furniture is looking for a 4th or 3rd Class Operating Engineer to join our plant operations team.
This isn't a boiler-watching position. You'll gain hands-on experience with a high-pressure biomass boiler, steam and condensate systems, compressed air, water treatment, dust collection, conveyors, pumps, valves and other plant utility equipment.
For a 4th Class Engineer looking to advance, our plant provides the opportunity to accrue qualifying operating experience toward your 3rd Class certification, subject to TSSA requirements.
Already have your 3rd Class? We offer a higher wage scale based on certification and experience.
What You'll Do
● Operate and monitor our high-pressure biomass boiler and associated steam systems.
● Perform boiler-water testing, blowdowns, inspections and operating logs.
● Complete preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on pumps, valves, piping and auxiliary equipment.
● Monitor and maintain compressed-air systems, dryers and filtration equipment.
● Inspect and maintain dust collection, wood-waste handling and conveyor systems.
● Troubleshoot mechanical and plant utility issues.
● Participate in shutdowns, inspections, repairs and improvement projects.
● Operate forklifts, elevated work platforms, tractors and other mobile equipment following training and authorization.
● Maintain safe, reliable plant operation throughout your assigned shift.
Independent Shift Responsibility
Following successful training, you will work as the sole Operating Engineer on your assigned shift, responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the boiler plant and associated utility systems.
We're looking for someone who is comfortable working independently, troubleshooting problems and taking ownership of their shift.
What We're Looking For
● Valid Ontario 4th Class or 3rd Class Operating Engineer Certificate.
● Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence.
● Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
● Commitment to safe work practices and preventative maintenance.
● Ability to work rotating afternoon and night shifts.
● Reliable transportation.
● Ability to report to the Durham facility within 45 minutes when assigned on-call duty.
● Availability for on-call coverage every second or third weekend and occasional shift coverage/overtime.

● Shift premiums for eligible shifts.
● Opportunity to gain qualifying experience toward 3rd Class certification.
● Company-provided First Aid, WHMIS, Working at Heights, fall arrest, forklift and scissor-lift/EWP training.
● Up to $200 safety-boot allowance under the company program.
● Extended health, dental, vision and life-insurance benefits, subject to eligibility.
● Hands-on mechanical and industrial maintenance experience.
● Free on-site parking.
