This is an until-filled competition that will be used to fill multiple Casual and Temporary Assignment positions working up to 80 hours bi-weekly. Applications will be assessed on a regular basis, so candidates are encouraged not to delay submitting their application as this posting can close at any time with 24-hours posted notice.

Resumes will be screened at regular intervals until the position is filled or the competition closes, whichever is earliest.

The Housing and Community Outreach Services (HCOS) unit provides a range of housing and community-based outreach supports to vulnerable individuals with complex care needs, including physical and cognitive disabilities, mental health issues, and substance use challenges. The Whitehorse Emergency Shelter (WES) provides immediate and safe access to shelter, meals, laundry and other support services to those experiencing crisis and/or presenting with a need for emergency shelter.

Shelter Supper Workers will be responsible for providing a safe environment for both shelter guests and staff, will complete regular shelter intake, and orients shelter users to the building and the resources available. Shelter Support Workers will play a vital role in recommending, referring and assisting shelter user to access other community and Yukon Government resources.

Experience working with vulnerable individuals with complex needs, such as substance use, mental health and/or physical health challenges
Experience working in a fast-paced environment that has a high frequency of crisis, including mental health and violence
Experience providing case management would be considered an asset
Experience providing crisis management and informal counselling would be considered an asset

Candidates should have and may be assessed on:
Demonstrates knowledge of trauma-informed practice, cultural competency, and harm reduction
Demonstrates ability to defuse crisis and respond to emergency situations
Demonstrate critical and abstract thinking
Excellent interpersonal, conflict management, and relationship building skills
Effective oral and written communication skills
Excellent organizational skills

Additional Information:
Conditions of Employment: Vulnerable Sector RCMP Security clearance, Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence, WHMIS 2015, TB screening, and Standard First Aid within 1 month of employment

Job Requirements: Works frequent evenings, nights, and rotations. To provide front-line supports to individuals accessing the Whitehorse Emergency Shelter, which includes: shelter intake, lay counselling, offering linkages and connections to community supports, and maintaining surveillance and over-sight of the facility to ensure guest and staff safety at all times. Works primarily in a facility setting. Exposure to clients with high levels of complex needs, substance use challenges and direct and vicarious trauma.
