Post-doctoral Fellowship in Program Evaluation
McMaster University Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) and McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences Education Research, Innovation and Theory program (MERIT)
A post-doctoral fellowship is available to conduct research through a partnership between McMaster University Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA mira.mcmaster.ca) and McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences Education Research, Innovation and Theory program (MERIT merit.mcmaster.ca).
MIRA has created online learning programs for health professionals and the broader academic community to enhance knowledge of research on aging and providing care for older adults. The fellow will conduct evaluative studies on the effectiveness of one or more of the educational programs. A partnership with MERIT will provide the fellow with opportunities to engage with scientists who have expertise in health sciences education.
This fellowship is a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in program evaluation, online learning technologies, and issues around aging, in an interdisciplinary environment. The candidate will participate in designing and implementing evaluations of MIRA education program(s), including the development of outcome frameworks and measures, and knowledge translation.
The primary supervisor is Dr. Michelle Howard, Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine. Her research interests are in the area of understanding how to best enhance the health care system to improve the experience and outcomes for people with serious illness or at the end of life. She teaches the program evaluation course in the Health Sciences Education graduate program and is a member of MERIT.
The fellowship experience will be tailored to meet career development goals and academic needs, via:
Mentorship and training by a research supervisor
Participation in MIRA trainee network meetings and rounds
Participation in regular research rounds and presentations with MERIT scientists
Development and submission of funding applications
Development and submission of manuscripts for publication
Peer support and collaboration with other research trainees
On completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be well prepared for a tenure track faculty position.
The fellowship is funded for one year with the possibility of a second year, pending further funding. The salary is $50,000/year plus benefits. A travel stipend of $4000 to attend academic conferences will also be provided.
Requirements: The candidate must have been awarded a PhD in a health, social science or education research related discipline, have an interest in aging research and strong quantitative research skills in study design, measurement and data analysis.
