The Communications Officer is responsible for developing and executing both internal and external communication strategies that support the organization’s change management initiatives, employee engagement efforts, and overall organizational alignment. This role ensures clear, timely, and effective messaging to a team of over 500 employees and contributes to the strategic execution of people and culture initiatives. Additionally, the Communications Officer supports external communication efforts to enhance brand visibility, stakeholder engagement, and public awareness of Lumenus’ programs and services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops and executes clear, effective communication plans that support organizational change initiatives, employee engagement, and strategic priorities.
- Applies change management frameworks to support organizational transformation and ensure effective communication during periods of change.
- Collaborates with leadership and other departments to draft, edit and distribute communications.
- Leads the planning and delivery of internal communications, including managing the communications calendar and ensuring consistency across all channels.
- Creates, edits, and distributes engaging content across internal platforms (e.g., intranet, email, teams), including announcements, reports, presentations, and leadership messages.
- Designs and implements internal campaigns that promote organizational culture, values, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
- Plans and executes internal events (e.g., town halls, leader exchange meetings, employee recognition programs), including communications, logistics, and promotion to drive engagement.
- Gathers and analyze employee feedback (e.g., surveys, engagement data) to strengthen communication effectiveness and employee experience.
- Maintain and optimize internal communication platforms (intranet and teams) to ensure timely, accessible, and user-friendly information sharing.
- Supports crisis and issues communications with timely, clear, and aligned messaging.
- Ensures all communications adhere to organizational brand standards, voice, accessibility requirements, and inclusive communication best practices.
- Collaborates with external partners as needed to support joint communications and initiatives.
- Creates written materials, including but not limited to; announcements, press release, letters, reports, social media content and presentations.
Qualifications:
- A university degree or college diploma related to the expertise required to succeed in this role
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a related role
- Experience in creating social media content
- Experience in supporting executive leadership communications
- Experience in planning and coordinating events (town halls, leadership meetings etc.)
- Proficient in communication best practices
- Strong writing skills and proven experience creating informative and engaging content
- A team player with the ability to work well independently
- Nonprofit, healthcare, or social services sector experience is an asset
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Proven ability to collaborate with and support cross-functional teams while maintaining effective working relationships
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and make sound, risk-informed decisions
- Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
- Highly professional, with demonstrated integrity, diplomacy, flexibility, accountability, and attention to detail
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including editing and content development
- Knowledge of communications best practices and the ability to create engaging, multi-format content (including video)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with digital tools, including:
- Content management or intranet platforms (e.g., SharePoint)
- Social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite)
- Graphic design tools (e.g., Canva or Adobe Creative Suite)
- Project management skills; experience with project tracking tools is an asset
- Understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, or a demonstrated willingness to learn
- Familiarity with change management frameworks is considered an asset
