Accessible Housing Society
Seeking Volunteer Candidates for Board of Directors
The Organization
Accessible Housing is a non-profit organization and registered charity with a mandate to open doors for people with limited mobility to enhance dignity through accessible homes that are appropriate and affordable.
Founded in 1974 by a group of individuals seeking to make a difference in the lives of young people living with physical disabilities, Calgary’s first shared living residence for young people with disabilities was started. Through the provision of personal care for activities such as getting up, going to bed, wheelchair transfers and meal preparation, the residents were able to live independently, attend school, or seek employment and volunteer activities.
Through outreach and residential programs, Accessible Housing provides housing and personal supports so that everyone can have a home, belong and participate fully in community.
Accessible Housing currently operates four main programs: Inclusio (residential care and supportive living for 45 individuals), Bridge to Home (community-based program for people with limited income and unstable housing; managed through long-term case management support), RAD (Residential Accessible Design) Renovations (providing design assistance for individuals experiencing mobility challenges in their present living environment; helps make spaces more accessible for all), and Chinook House (residential care and support for those with limited mobility requiring some assistance).
The Opportunity
Are you interested in contributing to this well-established organization and making a difference in the lives of those with diverse mobility needs?

The Board of Accessible Housing is governance focused and has a particular interest for individuals with expertise in the following areas: Real Estate and Property Development, Legal, Fund Development, Human Resources & Government Relations.
If you are interested in contributing to this initiative and advancing the role of the Board in this growth, we encourage you to read on and consider seeking a seat as a new Director.
Term
Members of the Board of Directors are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Directors serve for a three (3) year term with the option to serve two (2) terms. All Directors must submit a clear criminal record check upon being elected.
Time Commitment
The Accessible Housing Board of Directors meet quarterly; meetings are held both in person and virtually. Directors also participate in a least one sub-committee (Finance, Audit & Risk, Governance & HR, Advocacy & Advancement). Meetings for sub-committees are held virtually but may be held in person from time to time. If strategic planning sessions are required during the term, Directors are required to attend (all efforts will be made to ensure majority participation). Directors also attend the Annual General Meeting.
In addition to board and committee meetings, Directors are strongly encouraged to attend fundraising events and other organizational events throughout the year.
If this opportunity is the right fit for you and you want to give back to the community in a meaningful way, Accessible Housing wants to hear from you!
