Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Software Developer, Backend designs, builds, and improves the backend services, APIs, integrations, and data-driven capabilities that support Montrium’s Connect platform. The role balances the reliability of established customer-facing capabilities with the evolution of modern backend services and cloud-native engineering practices.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys building production-ready software, improving established systems, and working on backend services that support regulated content, workflow automation, data integrity, integrations, and platform reliability in customer environments.
As a member of the Development team, you will contribute to the following areas:
Develop and evolve backend product capabilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services, APIs, background jobs, and integration components that support regulated life sciences workflows.
- Build solutions using C#, .NET, ASP.NET Core, RESTful APIs, background processing, messaging patterns, and cloud-native design principles.
- Translate product requirements and technical designs into maintainable, observable, and testable application code.
- Contribute to API design, service boundaries, data models, and integration patterns that balance product value, performance, security, and maintainability.
- Use Azure services across compute, storage, messaging, identity, monitoring, and data to deliver secure, scalable, and observable product features.
- Improve existing backend services through better reliability, security, performance, scalability, observability, and maintainability.
- Diagnose and resolve issues involving APIs, identity, permissions, data access, background processing, integrations, and cloud platform behavior.
- Support release preparation, deployment readiness, environment validation, and controlled promotion of backend components across environments.
- Document key design decisions, integration points, operational behaviours, and troubleshooting guidance that support repeatable delivery and team knowledge sharing.
This role is ideal for a developer who enjoys improving established systems and contributing to modern cloud engineering patterns in a regulated product environment.
Contribute to a collaborative engineering culture
- Collaborate with developers, architects, product owners, quality assurance, DevOps, and support teams to deliver reliable product capabilities.
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, troubleshooting, and improvements to engineering practices.
- Use modern productivity and AI-assisted development tools, including GitHub Enterprise Copilot and Microsoft 365 AI capabilities, to improve coding, documentation, collaboration, and engineering efficiency while applying sound professional judgment.
- Communicate technical risks, dependencies, trade-offs, and delivery progress clearly.
- Share knowledge, support team learning, and work with autonomy, accountability, curiosity, and respect for sustainable delivery practices.
You will join a collaborative engineering team that values practical design, shared ownership, and sustainable delivery. If you enjoy improving established systems, learning new technologies, and making thoughtful engineering decisions, this role may be a strong fit.
Required Qualifications
- Three or more years of professional backend or cloud application development experience.
- Strong experience with C#, .NET, ASP.NET Core, RESTful APIs, object-oriented design, and practical software design patterns.
- Practical knowledge of Microsoft Azure services and cloud-native development patterns, including application hosting, storage, messaging, identity, monitoring, and secrets management.
- Ability to apply secure development practices, including input validation, least privilege, secrets management, secure API design, and protection of sensitive data.
- Familiarity with distributed systems, asynchronous processing, event-driven design, microservices concepts, and integration patterns.
- Experience with relational or NoSQL data stores, data modelling, query design, data access patterns, and performance-aware backend development.
- Working knowledge of Git, pull requests, code review, CI/CD practices, unit testing, automated functional testing, and controlled software delivery.
- Ability to diagnose backend issues involving APIs, authentication, authorization, data access, background processing, integrations, and cloud services.
- College diploma, university degree, or equivalent practical experience in software development, computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related field.
You will have opportunities to deepen your Azure expertise, contribute to architectural discussions, and grow into broader technical ownership as the platform evolves.
Additional Qualifications
- Experience with Azure services such as Azure Functions, Azure Service Bus, Azure Storage, Azure Key Vault, Azure App Configuration, Application Insights, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, or similar services.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code, managed identities, API gateways, or automated deployment patterns.
- Interest in or exposure to AI-enabled product features, document intelligence, automation, or other emerging cloud services.
- Familiarity with TypeScript, React, Redux, or other front-end technologies that support collaboration across full-stack teams.
- Experience in a SaaS, pharmaceutical, life sciences, regulated, or GxP product environment.
- Microsoft Azure or developer certification, or willingness to pursue one.
How You Work
- Strong interpersonal and time-management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfortable working through ambiguity and balancing technical detail with product, quality, and customer needs.
- Curious, practical, and proactive when learning new technologies or investigating complex issues.
- Quality-minded, with attention to maintainability, reliability, and long-term product value.
- Comfortable working in a smaller-company environment where team members are adaptable, take ownership beyond narrowly defined responsibilities, and help shape practical ways of working.
- Written and spoken fluency in English and French is essential (other languages are an asset).
Benefits
