Dock Hand - Full Time
The Marina Dock Hand position is an exciting opportunity to join our energetic team of maritime professionals. Marina Dock Hands are eager, dedicated employees who work hard to ensure our marina operates efficiently and its hundreds of guests remain satisfied with their stay. They are responsible for safely docking visiting vessels, performing the general maintenance operations of the marina facility, and carrying out hospitality and customer service duties. They play an essential part of our business by ensuring the safe arrival and departure of vessels, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and acting as an ambassador for our Marina. The employee will perform a variety of maintenance duties such as, but not limited to painting, groundskeeping, and custodial duties. Marina Dock Hands will use existing skills and/or learn how to tie knots, operate vessels, communicate over VHF marine radio, and other basic maritime skills.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with marina management and the safe dockage of private yachts and vessels by communicating over VHF radio and tying proper dock lines and fenders
- Perform daily dock check list which includes inspecting docked vessels’ dock lines, electrical cords and fenders to ensure safety and reviewing all public areas are free of safety hazards, and are clean and in good repair
- Register and collect payment from marina and inn guests
- Provide fuel dock services by safely directing the fueling of vessels, assisting customers in a professional manner, processing payments accurately, and strictly following all safety procedures and protocols.
- Support the Manager with the care of dock facilities
- Routine maintenance and cleaning duties including trash removal that meets established quality standards for all marina related operations including rest rooms, docks, walkways, ramps, equipment and other areas designated by management
- Monitor the security of the marina including the unauthorized entry of vessels and people
- Assist and support special events/activities taking place at the marina
- Restocking, monitoring and selling at our gift store.
- Be comfortable working outside, rain or shine at various times of the day.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols
- Operate a variety of equipment such as pressure washers, saws, drills, and other equipment related to the maintenance of docks
- Ability to use a PC and/or tablet
- Successfully manage time and prioritize tasks within given parameters
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, other marina employees, and public in general
- Communicate effectively in English, both orally and written, with individuals and groups regarding all issues or regulations affecting the marina
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Operate equipment pertinent to job duties
- ROCM or willing to obtain
- Customer Service Skills; telephone etiquette, guest greetings, service experience, comfort in directing or de-escalating customer escalations.
- Cash and digital payment transaction experience; not limited to daily cashout sheets, floats, petty cash and direct customer transactions not limited to our gift store.
- Able to take direction and feedback with a can-do attitude.
- Experience working with large moving vessels.
- Aptitude for basic math skills as not all POS is automated.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- Customer service experience, preferably in the tourism industry and/or retail
- Prior experience in marine industry or related field
- Knowledge of basic nautical terminology or the ability to learn such skills quickly
- Line handling skills including the ability to tie bowline, clove hitch, and half hitch knots, toss and cleat lines
- Basic First Aid
Physical Demands of the Job:
This position will require standing for long periods of time, pushing, lifting, and pulling heavy objects. This position may also demand working around and utilizing cleaning agents, paints and other chemicals. The position requires the ability to operate and move around powered equipment such as pressure washers and power tools.
