About the Role
The Director of Human Resources is a member of SoM's leadership team that reports to the SoM Executive Director. The position plays an important role in all human resources matters at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music (SoM).
The Director of Human Resources is responsible for providing leadership to SoM related to all Human Resources activities of the organization, and to ensure the effective operation of the Human Resources department within approved budgets and in alignment with SoM’s vision, purpose and strategic objectives.
SoM invested in creating an internal HR department in the Spring of 2023. There are currently no plans to expand the team beyond one, director level employee. As such this role has ownership of all HR strategies and initiatives. While structure and procedures have been put in place in the past two years, this department is very much in ongoing development. As such, we require a self-starter who is willing to be hands-on, is confident leading new initiatives and thrives in a busy, self-directed environment.
This is a full time, salaried position that is eligible for benefits upon the completion of probation. The starting salary range for this position is $90,000 CAD - $95,000 CAD per year depending on experience.
There is a planned start date for this position of Wednesday January 8th, 2025. This is a 14 month, fixed term contract providing maternity leave coverage for the incumbent in the role.
This is a hybrid role, with the ideal candidate working 3 days per week in the office and 2 days per week remotely from home. Because of this, candidates who are unable to commute to the Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver, BC will not be considered.
In this role your days are filled with:
- Providing oversight and leadership to the Executive Director and the SoM Leadership team related to HR matters
- Collaborating with the SoM Leadership Team on the execution of the Strategic and Operations Plans; leading and executing all HR aspects and reporting on progress
- Providing robust support to all SoM employees, acting as the main point of contact for employee grievances
- Ensuring organizational compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines
- Administering Manulife and MyHSA Health Spending Account benefits including; setting up new employees and making necessary updates, removing terminated employees, managing the relationship with our Benefits Broker, making recommendations for enhancements and managing annual renewal, fielding employees queries
- Owning and administering SoM policies and procedures
- Managing and executing the recruitment and selection process for internal and external postings
- Leading SoM employer branding, while representing SoM as the main point of contact for prospective candidates
- Leading the onboarding and offboarding process in collaboration with key team members
- Owning and administering SoM’s Hourly Compensation Framework, working towards the development of a Salary Compensation Framework
- Developing and administering the annual Performance and Development review process
- Maintaining up to date employment agreements and job descriptions for all SoM staff
- Facilitating professional development and training opportunities for SoM staff
- Tracking employee absences including sick and vacation time
- Maintaining valid criminal record and vulnerable sector checks for all SoM staff
- Submitting short term disability claims according to policy, working with SoM’s third party claim management partner as required
- Measuring employee engagement and working to improve staff retention and advancement
- Leading initiatives to enhance SoM employee wellbeing
- Developing SoM succession planning
Skills, Experience, Abilities and Qualifications required:
- A relevant post-secondary degree or combination of relevant training, education, and experience (CPHR or other relevant designations an asset)
- 6-8 years of progressive HR experience, including leadership or advisory roles
- Strong knowledge of employment legislation and HR best practices
- Ability to work with a high ethical standard and strong attention to detail
- Ability to take ownership of your tasks and work well independently
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated team - based skill set. Ability to work independently while thriving on a team
- Experience dealing with confidentiality and sensitive information
- Proven problem-solving skills and ability to mediate and resolve workplace issues
- Excellent people skills and the ability to communicate with enthusiasm and energy
- Passion for creating an inclusive, positive and collaborative workplace culture
- Empathy and strong emotional intelligence
- Experience with a variety of tech tools - Gmail, Workspace, Dropbox, Discord, Dayforce
- Meticulously organized with attention to detail
- Strong time management skills
