About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 77-year-old woman living with dementia in New Edinburgh, Ottawa. She lives at home with her devoted husband, who has been her primary caregiver for the past five years. While he's doing an excellent job, the family recognizes he needs support to maintain his own health and activities. The client is reserved, introverted, and experiences anxiety when her husband is away. She's comfortable in both English and French, though French is preferred. She remains independent with mobility and personal care but benefits from gentle prompts and redirection due to cognitive changes.
Responsibilities:
- Provide calm, patient companionship while the husband takes time for his own activities
- Assist with light housekeeping tasks cooperatively with the client (laundry, tidying)
- Offer memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed
- Engage the client in simple activities she enjoys, respecting her quiet nature
- Accompany her on short walks with the family's small dog around the block
- Help maintain her sense of independence by involving her in tasks at her comfort level
- Understand that some visits may be quiet—she may simply read while you're present, and that's perfectly fine
What We're Looking For:
- Fluent in French (strongly preferred) or English
- Calm, patient demeanor with a low-key personality—no high energy or overly bubbly approaches
- Experience with dementia care and understanding of cognitive support needs
- Comfortable with a gradual introduction process as the client adjusts to a new person
- Respectful of the client's reserved nature and need for routine
- Ability to work cooperatively, making tasks feel collaborative rather than service-oriented
- Light housekeeping skills
- Reliable and consistent presence to build trust over time
Schedule:
Twice weekly visits, 3 hours per visit (6 hours total per week). The family envisions the husband being present for the first hour initially, then gradually stepping away for longer periods as the client becomes comfortable with the caregiver. Flexibility during the transition period is appreciated. The family is starting with a one-month trial to ensure a good fit for everyone.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference for a family navigating dementia care while helping a dedicated husband maintain his own wellbeing.
