This position contributes to adult newcomers’ successful integration to Canada by fostering their English language skill development in a client-centered, real world task based classroom learning environment. This position respects the diversity of clients’ backgrounds, learning styles, and needs to plan effective modules and activities which motivate learners to learn, practice and demonstrate their English language competencies in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. The Substitute EAL Teacher uses pro-active communication skills and classroom management strategies to maintain a customer-centered environment which is respectful of the diversity of staff and clients, and ensures funder contractual obligations are met or exceeded in the context of CFN’s vision and workplace values. This role collaborates closely with EAL teachers and reports to the Program Manager.
Key Result Areas and Responsibilities:
Classroom
· Accurately assess the needs, goals, and progress of individual learners using activities and techniques appropriate to the learner’s English level
· Use the Canadian Language Benchmarks (2012) and Portfolio Based Language Assessment processes to plan level-appropriate lessons
· Facilitate meaningful and engaging activities for learners to learn, practice and demonstrate the four competencies in each of the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing
· Use authentic and level- appropriate materials, special speakers, fieldtrips and technology to enrich the learning experience
· Independently use appropriate conflict-resolution and communication strategies to manage learner expectations or concerns regarding language progress, assessment results, attendance
Administrative
· Accurately maintain digital and/or written records of students’ attendance, basic personal information, current Canadian Language Benchmarks, field trip reports and progress reports as requested and/or scheduled
· Respect and follow policies and guidelines regarding CFN’s resources, materials, equipment, and classrooms
· Accurately maintain digital and/or written records of classroom modules, lessons, activities as requested and/or scheduled
· Pro-actively participate and problem solve with colleagues and program administration staff during scheduled meetings
Qualifications
Service Orientation: Cultural sensitivity and experience related to teaching adults in an English as an Additional Language classroom context; Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence
Education: Degree in Teaching English as a Second/Additional Language, Linguistics, Education or a related field; specific courses or professional development related to teaching EAL and EAL methodology, Canadian Language Benchmarks and Portfolio Based Language Assessment
Technical: Intermediate computer skills; proven ability to introduce adult students to technology as a learning resource
Teamwork: Pro-actively participates in team activities sharing ideas, concerns and solutions
Communication: Effectively listens to and responds to student needs; communicates clearly orally and in writing to meet expressed needs
Fluent in both English and Farsi/Dari/Pashto
Hours: 11:30am-1:30pm, Mon to Thu, 8 hours a week
