The Director of Marketing & Communications leads the planning, execution, and oversight of Encorp’s marketing strategies, public education initiatives, stakeholder communications, media relations, and crisis communications.
The Director will play a key role in developing and implementing strategic communications and crisis management plans that support the organization’s objectives. This includes leading high-level communications with internal and external stakeholders, managing media inquiries, and preparing and coaching the CEO and/or other spokespersons for public and media engagements.
Reporting to the President & CEO and the Board of Directors’ Communications & Government Relations Committee, the Director leads a small internal team and coordinates with external agencies, contractors, and service providers, as required. In this role, the Director ensures the coordinated delivery of impactful campaigns, effective media outreach, and timely, well-crafted responses in both day-to-day operations and high-pressure situations—maintaining alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives and communications plans.
Responsibilities
Strategic Planning
- Develop and implement annual Communications Plans and budgets.
- Set priorities, monitor progress, and ensure alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
- Report on communications outcomes and budget performance to the Leadership team and the Board of Directors’ Communications & Government Relations Committee.
Stakeholder Engagement & Media Relations
· Lead strategic communications planning, reputation management, and issues preparedness.
- Create stakeholder engagement plans to ensure active and positive engagement with key stakeholders in all jurisdictions where Encorp manages an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) beverage container recycling program, including:
- Redemption centre/depot operators
- Beverage industry members
- Government and oversight agencies
- Media
- Responsible for internal communications to key stakeholder groups, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with Encorp’s strategic priorities.
- Respond to media inquiries and provide key messaging, media statements, and briefing materials to Encorp spokespersons, including the CEO. Monitor media coverage, assess potential reputational impacts, and coordinate proactive or responsive actions as necessary.
- Lead the development and implementation of crisis communication protocols and response strategies.
- Represent Encorp in national marketing & communications working group meetings for the Beverage Container Recovery Network (BCRN) of Canada.
- Attend Board of Directors and Communications & Government Relations Committee meetings as required.
Marketing & Communications Content Management
- Lead the Communications team in developing and delivering marketing campaigns and advertising initiatives that promote beverage container recycling and drive public participation, overseeing work produced by creative agencies and internal staff, and approving content across all communication channels.
- Review/coordinate marketing/ad campaign rollouts, track performance, and lead team in adjusting strategies based on results.
- Supervise the Communications team’s management of Encorp’s websites, digital presence, and social media channels.
· Supervise the Communications team’s efforts to grow and execute Recycling Hero public education and outreach special programming meant to engage schools and communities.
Reporting & Strategic Documents
- Collaborate with the Leadership and Communications team to draft and review Encorp’s Annual Reports and Stewardship Plans.
- Ensure all public and stakeholder reports reflect accurate data, clear messaging, and alignment with Encorp’s strategic priorities.
Events & Special Projects
- Provide communication leadership for public events, including speech writing, media coordination, visual presentation, etc.
- Serve as media liaison during events, ensuring coverage opportunities are maximized.
Other Duties
- Perform additional strategic communications functions as required by the President & CEO or Board.
Qualifications/Experience
This position requires that the incumbent possess an undergraduate degree from a recognized university with specialization in communications or marketing, or another discipline related to the position, coupled with the following:
· Experience in and sound knowledge of public relations, communications/marketing methods and trends.
· Strong experience in media relations and communications crisis management.
· Strong experience in stakeholder relations/engagement management.
· Experience working with board of directors and reporting on communications strategies/outcomes with key metrics and analysis.
· Experience managing a communications team, and/or working with external contractors and agencies in crafting and delivering engaging communications tools and high-performing marketing/ad campaigns.
- Strong communication skills in English and French, both oral and written.
- Time management skills and ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines.
- Ability to take the initiative and work under minimal supervision.
- Problem-solving skills.
Pay: $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
