The Legislative Counsel Office (LCO) is responsible for supporting the government’s legislative agenda by drafting government bills, regulations, and Orders in Council. The office also works closely with Alberta King’s Printer to make the laws of Alberta available to the public.

In your role as a Legislative Editor, you will support the legislative process by ensuring that editorial and publications work meets the high drafting and presentation standards required for Alberta legislation.
Your responsibilities as a Legislative Editor include:
- Substantive editing, copy-editing and proofreading of draft legislation.
- Proofreading consolidated statutes and regulations.
- Preparing final versions of legislative documents for printing and publication, including Bills, casebound annual volumes of statutes, looseleaf statute update releases and Part II of The Alberta Gazette.
- Supporting the implementation of a new Legislative Information Management System (LIMS) by proofreading legislation converted to an XML-based publishing format.
- Substantive editing, copy-editing and proofreading of revised statutes as part of the Revised Statutes of Alberta initiative.
- Responding to email and telephone queries regarding the currency of and changes to legislation.
To be successful in this role you will need:
- Advanced English language and substantive editing skills, including demonstrated ability to edit and proofread complex and technical legislative documents.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet competing deadlines.
- Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Minimum Requirements:
- 4-year University degree in a related field (English, Language Arts, Linguistics, Journalism, Law) plus 2 years of directly related experience.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education (a combined total of 6 years of directly related education and/or experience).
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following assets:
- At least 2 years of substantive editing experience.
- Master’s or PhD in a related field (English, Language Arts, Linguistics, Journalism, Law).
- Experience working with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Experience working in a legal environment.
- Experience conducting research into a wide variety of topics.
- Experience editing in accordance with a style guide.

We have 3 temporary salaried positions to fill, which are expected to continue for 5 or 6 years.
This advertisement may be used to fill future similar positions within the GOA.
