Research across UHN's 7 research institutes spans the full spectrum of diseases and disciplines, including cancer, cardiovascular sciences, transplantation, neural and sensory sciences, musculoskeletal health, rehabilitation sciences, and community and population health. UHN is affiliated with the University of Toronto and a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network.
As an integral member of the Finance and Research leadership teams, the Director, Financial and Business Services will report to the Senior Director, Research Financial Services. Responsibilities of the role include:
Oversee the financial administration, reporting and compliance for the Research Directorate’s 6,000+ grant accounts.
Closely collaborates with Research executive, provides strategic and tactical business support, and oversees the financial planning and forecasting for UHN’s 7 Research Institutes, and other lines of business.
Leads, provides direction and coaching to highly motivated finance leaders and large teams within Research Financial services, Research Institutes, and lines of business.
Ensures appropriate policies, procedures and metrics are in place to deliver exemplary customer service and monitor performance.
Drive continuous process improvements to ensure efficient use and stewardship of resources and effective use of technology.
Ensures appropriate internal controls to safeguard hospital assets and reputation, for accurate financial reporting and for compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
Ensures all funds are accounted for in accordance with GAAP and internal policies
Identify risks related to grant and operational accounts and provide recommendation on course of corrective action.
Establish departmental goals and objectives, developing short and long term plans, while monitoring and evaluating the progress in achieving these plans.
Supports, leads and drives key hospital and research strategic and operational priorities, and participates in enterprise wide projects and committees.
A university degree in business (or health science related discipline) from a recognized and accredited educational institution is required.
A post graduate degree in business, health administration related discipline, or a recognized professional accounting designation; CPA or equivalent, is required.
A PhD in a business, health administration or science related discipline would be an asset.
Strong business acumen with solid experience in business management, operations, financial planning, performance measurement and budgeting functions.
A minimum of seven years of progressive financial or business management experience in a complex organization.
Proven track record of leading motivated teams and strong people management skills
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to articulate complex financial and business issues to a broad and diverse audience.
Ability to work and thrive in a changing environment while experiencing financial constraints.
Capacity to build partnerships, work collaboratively and effectively communicate to diverse groups both within and external to UHN.
High emotional intelligence and ability to influence business partners.
Recognized as ethical and independent, demonstrating high standards of professionalism and respect for confidentiality.
Demonstrated excellent performance and attendance history.
Experience in a healthcare environment is an asset.
Exposure to data sciences, including data analytics is beneficial.
A strong service orientation with a passion to advance the mission of UHN.
