We are looking for an Electrical Design Engineer who will work remotely, at present, for our Ottawa office.
As a part of the Design Service team, the Electrical Design Engineer will act as a Work Package Manager to manage electrical work for programs; to work as designer to complete Design Office tasks such as creating block diagrams, cable drawings, cable schedules, cable termination schedules along with supporting Systems Engineering.
You will also manage electrical designers, electrical engineers and electrical technologists. When it is required, s/he will be supporting the Mechanical group as designing rack, assembly parts, and layouts for mechanical systems.
Last, you will manage and complete deliveries according to the integrated master schedule with the highest quality and on time. The expected result is delivery of a vessel that satisfies all Customer Requirements within Thales’ scope of work.
Provide Engineering Support Function for assigned NSS and other projects
Managing all electrical design work packages for all programs as being point of contact person for Design Service Electrical Work
Creating a standard approach and practice guideline for managing and controlling cable tagging's
Assigning tags or identifiers as required
Managing system cables that are coordinating with vendors or Tier 1 suppliers by actively communicating with the external stakeholders to identify and discuss boundaries such as junction boxes and pin outs creating solutions which will serve the purpose of the system based on the customer requirements
Assisting with mechanical interface/space considerations and analyzing with the team to create effective and viable solutions
Supporting cable tagging, equipment tagging proposed baseline changes that arise during the design and work through to completion by engaging appropriate Thales Systems Engineering resources, the Customer, Suppliers, and other stakeholders to define the overall solution
Supporting the Mechanical engineering group to create mechanical drawings, and 3D assemblies
Representing Thales Engineering in customer meetings to discuss technical discussions such as cable diagram updates based on Customer’s Cloudis tool needs
Creating Design Office work procedures, flow charts, checklists and guidelines to standardize the approach on all programs that align with Thales Chorus DDQS
Analyze, define, trace, and manage systems requirement for all elements of the solution
Analyze risk and opportunities for Design Service Electrical Work packages technical items, project planning and scheduling concerns and communicate risks and opportunities with all project stakeholders in advance
Capturing opportunities to be automated in design service tools, work flows, manual work and communicate these opportunities with automation team and work with them in order to establish much efficient, cost effective, productive automated processes
Supporting and Managing platform data by updating, and developing installation packages
Ensuring that design integrity requirements (activities and deliverables) are correctly cascaded to subcontractors and Thales VSY Design Office team and production team
Writing SQL, MS Access Access, VBA scripts to improve performance on the drafting tools such as SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD
Ensuring Thales Engineering Data is communicated correctly to the Integrated Product Team (IPT) members
Contributes to risk management and risk mitigation strategies
Assists with obtaining stakeholder agreement changes and the management of system requirements
Managing, coaching, supervising and mentoring electrical engineers, designers and technologists
Periodic inspections and field work in the lab or shipyard - if necessary
Required Skills and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline with relevant experience
Must have 3-5 years experience in a systems engineering environment, ideally in the defence industry
Need 2-3 years of experience on managing work packages of subsystem or systems electrical design projects and leading electrical engineers, designers
Preferred Skills and Experience:
High level of planning, task management, analytical, and time management skills
High level oral and written communication skills required for report writing and design justification documentation
Experience in the Systems Engineering life cycle, including typical modeling tools for design such as SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD
Knowledge of scripting SQL, MS Access, VBA on data environment
It would be an asset to have a comprehensive understanding of naval systems and design standards for commercial and naval platforms following IMO and Class requirements, Lloyds Register Rules & Regulations, IEC standards, IMO Regulations, SOLAS regulations, Transport Canada Marine Acts and Regulations
Experience in ship design, build, operation and maintenance is an asset
Having experience with Canadian ship building requirements for shock and vibration, EMC/EMI, drawing standards and industry design standards would be an asset
This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, Canadian Controlled Goods Program, the Canadian Industrial Security Program, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
