DEFINITION
The Structural Inspector role shall be the onsite representative who has the responsibility for inspection of the work in progress to monitor how the final product is in accordance with the terms of construction contracts and keep records of construction activities and payments.
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience in Construction Inspection of bridge construction and rehabilitation.
Certified with OACETT as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.)
Sound knowledge of design standards, OPS specifications, standard drawings, materials and methods associated with bridge construction. Knowledge of Legislative requirements including Environmental, Health and Safety requirements and their application in practical circumstances, and have proven recent successful experience in their assigned area of responsibility on construction projects of similar size and nature.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Inspector Shall:
Report directly to our Contract Administrator or Project Manager administratively on a day-to-day basis and will be responsible for monitoring and reporting day-to-day construction activities and status to our Contract Administrator/Project Manager and will be present to inspect, verify and document in detail, construction activities and field conditions during the Project.
Be the interpreter of the contract documents and monitor the performance of the contractor. Interpretations of the Inspector shall be consistent with the intent of the Contract Documents and in making these decisions the Inspector will not show partiality to either party
On issues involving significant changes to the contract, our Inspector will consult with the Contract Administrator (CA) or Project Manager (PM) and will assist in evaluating the proposed changes.
Be responsible for direct Inspection of construction activities and will attend the site on a regular basis as construction proceeds, to review progress and monitor compliance with contract specifications.
Review site conditions to verify that all required Traffic Signing and other Contract requirements are maintained by the Contractor during the Project. Monitor that safety to the traveling public is maintained throughout the Project through the contractors enforcement of Traffic Staging requirements.
As required, co-ordinate materials testing with a Materials Testing firm.
Ensure daily documentation is completed and maintained to record field conditions and Contractor activities throughout construction.
Examine contract specifications carefully to be able to review and monitor contractor compliance to material specifications and environmental concerns such as siltation control.
Monitor that the Contractor obtains any necessary utility locates prior to excavation during the Project.
Have proven negotiation skills.
Metrolinx Personal Track Safety training is an asset.
Night shift may be required.
DUTIES
Inspection of assigned aspects of Construction Activities and Inspection of the Contract on Behalf of the owner including but not limited to:
- Ensure compliance to the Consultants Quality Control Plan
- Review contract documents for errors, omissions or anomalies
- Monitor safety concerns
- Monitor coordination with adjacent contractors/work by others re: construction issue
- Address communication with the Client, external agencies and the general public
- Maintain public relations during construction
- Submit daily reports to our Contract Administrator containing details of all Contractor activities, personnel, machinery, and plant on site including weather conditions, soil conditions and work completed.
- Track item quantities for progress payments
- Monitor and report item over / under-runs to Contract Administrator/Project Manager
- Assist in Investigation of Changes in the Character of the Work
- Monitor compliance with all contract specifications and special contract requirements.
- Evaluate and assess contractor’s performance/monitor during construction
- Monitor compliance with contractors Quality Control Plan
- Monitor that appropriate testing of materials is performed and assess test results
- Monitor Environmental Controls, Concerns and Constraints

Pay: $25.00-$30.00 per hour
