Department: Dual Diagnosis Unit (Birch Lodge)
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Graduate of a recognized Physiotherapy Assistant and/or Occupational Therapy Assistant program required
- Knowledge of geriatric psychiatry, dual diagnosis and relevant legislation required
- Demonstrated skills and experience to provide holistic supports, helping individuals successfully attain goals of self-care, independent living, leisure and productivity and connectivity to their community.
- Knowledge and experience with providing specialized programming for individuals living with a dual diagnosis and mental illness.
- Knowledge of psychiatric medications and symptom management
- Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) required
- PIECES an asset
- Safe food handling certification is an asset
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) required (recent within the last twelve months)
Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to teach new activities to patients and report all treatment concerns back to the OT
- Effective communication skills to develop a therapeutic rapport with people who have a variety of mental illnesses
- Ability to effectively provide health teaching to individuals and groups required.
- Demonstrated skills to work collaboratively with the inpatient occupational therapist, members of both inpatient and outreach teams to ensure treatment and community integration are seamless
- Strong intervention skills in engaging patients and families required
- Excellent level of written and verbal communication skills required to effectively liaise, consult and exchange information with patients, families, multidisciplinary team members, clinicians, peers and community contacts/representatives
- Able to organize daily activities efficiently and effectively
- Able to work with minimal independence required
- Practice in a safe, ethical and effective manner
- Good attendance and work record required
- Physical capability and/or able to employ innovative strategies to handle physically impaired patients required
- Demonstrated computer skills/knowledge required
- Valid class G Driver’s license and ministry of Transportation Driver’s Abstract required for extensive travel within the catchment area required.
- Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
- Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset
