MEDICINE HAT SPCA (MHSPCA) SHELTER DIRECTOR
Medicine Hat SPCA (MHSPCA) is looking for a Full-time Shelter Director to lead our team of staff and volunteers, working together to ensure our animals receive the highest level of care whilst they are waiting for their forever homes.
MHSPCA, is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing animals in our community and finding adoptive homes for them. With a small team of paid staff, we rely on our caring and experienced volunteers every day. We work very hard at finding homes for even the most difficult to place animals. We do not believe that euthanasia is an acceptable method of population control but that spay and neuter is the only humane way to combat the problem. MHSPCA is run strictly on donations, memberships, grants, and adoption fees.
THE OPPORTUNITY
MHSPCA is seeking an organized, enthusiastic leader to join as our Shelter Director. The Shelter Director reports to the Board of Directors and will be accountable for leading and managing the day-to-day operations of the shelter. This position is Full-time, 8-hour shift, Monday to Friday, with some weekend and evening availability required.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Employees and Volunteers
- Recruits, interviews, and hires Shelter staff.
- Develops employee job routines and assignments ensuring staff are appropriately trained.
- Prepares work schedules for all employees, volunteers, and co-operative education students.
- Conducts and participates in meetings with staff to review procedures, discuss workplace issues and share ideas to improve animal care.
- Addresses employee problems and concerns, completes performance reviews, and performs performance management when required.
- Recruits, interviews, and hires volunteers and ensures volunteers are appropriately trained.
Animal Care
- Oversees the animal operations and foster programs working with the Animal Health Lead including the scheduling of surgery, ordering of medication and all medical tests for shelter animals.
- Leads staff discussions regarding placement decisions, behaviour plans and other animal related concerns.
- Maintain shelter records and statistics.
- Ensure the information given to the public and adoptive parents is accurate and correct regarding the animals.
- In partnership with staff and veterinarians, enforce all policies and protocols to protect the health and wellbeing of the animals in the shelter.
- Stay abreast of best practices in animal care, perform ongoing evaluations of existing programs and practices and continually look for ways to improve.
- Management of the Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Assistance Program including management and reporting for the Humane Society Services (HSS) Grant from the City of Medicine Hat.
Shelter Management and Operations
- Develop an annual operational plan incorporating goals & objectives that support the strategic direction of the organization,
- Meet regularly with Board members and committees to develop short and long-range plans and programs and to review policies and procedures.
- Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization, which includes budget, staffing, and functions of animal admissions, animal care, and adoptions,
- Oversee all inventories and ordering of shelter supplies and equipment to ensure the appropriate quantities of supplies are always available.
- Inspect shelter property and coordinate any needed repairs and maintenance to ensure a clean and safe work environment. Monitor safety compliance for MHSPCA site, staff, and volunteers.
- Review & draft policies for the approval by the Board of Directors and prepare procedures to implement the policies.
- Lead any special projects for the SPCA.
- Develop, implement, and manage a community education strategy to support the education of youth, students and the general public in the importance of animal health, spay & neutering, animal health careers etc.,
General
- Participate in annual budgeting and monitor budget expenditures and cashflow monthly.
- Initiate fund-raising opportunities and research grants, write grant proposals.
- Oversee fund-raising and promotion projects from inception to completion.
- Oversee web and social media content and usage.
- Prepare and present monthly facility operations reports to the SPCA Board of Directors monthly,
Community Engagement
- Form and maintain positive relationships with community leaders, SPCA stakeholders, animal shelter and rescue organizations, local veterinarian professionals, as well as other not for profit organizations,
- Act in the capacity of organization ambassador; identifying opportunities to promote the SPCA and its programs and services,
- Act as organization liaison with City of Medicine Hat and regional municipality leaders.
- Act as a responsible spokesperson on behalf of the MHSPCA demonstrating the organization’s values and mission,
- Prepare and present to community groups or organizations as needed,
- Act as MHSPCA’s main contact with all media on a regular basis.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- Post-secondary education in management, business or a related field is preferred,
- Previous Management experience is required,
- 3-5 years’ experience working in an animal shelter and/or veterinary clinic or working with a non-profit organization in a leadership role is preferred,
- Proficiency in use of computers, including database management,
- Experience with social media would be an asset.
- Good communication and customer service skills with compassion for animals,
- Able to deal with the public in a professional manner and develop and maintain positive relationships with staff, stakeholders, and the community,
- Organized, self-motivated and the ability to set priorities and manage workloads with minimal supervision,
- Ability to lead by example regarding reliability, honesty & integrity and inspire a diverse team,
- Act in a manner that is above reproach.
