Start on the Press. Grow Into an Operator.
At Wedlock Paper Converters, we run a W&H Miraflex CI 8-colour flexographic press — one of the most capable machines in flexible packaging printing. Our Press Assistant role is the entry point to our press crew, and it’s built as the first step in a real career path through Wedlock’s Training Academy.
This isn’t a sweeping-and-fetching role. You’ll be cross-trained in plate mounting as a core, independently-performed skill. Strong performers move forward to Junior Press Operator.
Who We Are
Wedlock Paper Converters Ltd. is a Mississauga-based manufacturer of flexible packaging and converted paper products, serving food and consumer goods customers across North America. We operate to GMP, AIB, and food-safety standards, and our press crew takes print quality seriously.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll work directly with the Press Operator through set-up, production runs, and changeovers. Here’s what that looks like day to day:
Press Support & Changeovers
- Assist the Press Operator with set-up and changeovers: stage plates, anilox rolls, and inks; support web threading and between-job clean-up
- Handle, stage, and move materials safely — substrate rolls, ink pails, plate cylinders, finished rolls — using appropriate lifting equipment
- Support basic in-process quality checks (visual inspection, roll condition, splice quality) under direction of the Press Operator
Plate Mounting
- Cross-train in plate mounting on the Miraflex CI press
- Mount plates independently and proficiently to registration and quality standards
- Verify mounted plates against work orders and artwork approvals before press start-up — flag any discrepancies before the job runs
Housekeeping, Documentation & Safety
- Perform ink pot clean-out, anilox and press component cleaning, and 5S housekeeping around the press on schedule
- Complete assigned production, waste, and mounting log entries accurately
- Follow all LOTO, machine guarding, and PPE requirements; participate in GMP and food-safety practices
What You Bring to the Table
No prior press-room experience required — we’ll train you. Here’s what matters:
- High school diploma (OSSD) or equivalent
- Good manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude — plate mounting is precision work that requires a steady, careful approach
- Ability and genuine willingness to learn plate mounting to full independent proficiency within a defined training period
- Comfortable following detailed work instructions and colour/registration standards
- Able to lift up to 25 kg (55 lb) and stand for extended periods during press runs and changeovers
- Basic computer literacy for production log entry
- Able to work rotating shifts including days, afternoons, nights, and weekends as required
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and comfortable working closely with rotating equipment
- Prior experience in manufacturing, warehousing, or hands-on production work is an asset
The Real Talk: What This Job Is Like
- Rotating shifts — days, afternoons, nights, and weekends are part of the schedule
- Active manufacturing floor environment: noise, moving machinery, inks and solvents, variable temperatures. PPE is provided and mandatory
- Physically demanding — you’ll be on your feet, lifting, and doing fine motor work (plate mounting) throughout your shift
- Cleanliness and 5S are part of the job, not extras
- You’re learning from experienced press operators — show up ready to absorb everything
