Job Description:
The Senior AV Technician provides leading support for AV and broadcast services for live in-person, hybrid and virtual corporate meetings and events at Sun Life. The Technician leads business partners to the best possible solutions and ensures the services are delivered at a high-quality standard and professional caliber, providing direction to team members and vendor partners as required. The Technician leads onsite and virtual events for our most senior executives with high expectations and can thrive in high-pressure circumstances, as well as multi-site hybrid events with advanced technical complexity.
The Technician provides the hands-on delivery of audio-visual services for on-site events as well as in virtual events platforms for Sun Life Financial business groups and senior leadership teams, as well as assignment, training and direction for other AV technicians working at the assigned site. The Technician is responsible for the AV equipment operations at assigned conference centre spaces and ensuring the equipment is properly maintained and operating, and coordinates break-fix and regular service support with vendor partner. The technician is responsible for assigned Virtual Platform departmental operations and updating tools and improving practices. The Technician leads and contributes to departmental practices, systems and training programs, improving the working processes and skills of the entire technical services team.
AV equipment includes all audio equipment (digital mixers, wireless mics), video (projectors, switchers, video conferencing units, cameras, various sources), lighting, as well as staging, etc. Virtual event services include streamed live and recorded events on a wide range of platforms as well as Hybrid events with simultaneous live and in person components.
This in-office role is based at our Toronto York and Toronto Atria locations, onsite to support events and collaborate with team members. The Technician reports to the Senior Manager, AV Services (People Manager) as well as receives support and direction from the Senior Manager, Production Services and Senior Manager, Broadcast Services (Practice Managers). The Technician works closely with members of the technician team, as well as the Producing, Multimedia and Operations teams in the delivery of our overall department initiatives. The Technician is a leading member of a multi-site operations team, working closely with other location-based partners to deliver a seamless employee and guest experience in alignment with the Future of Work vision for Sun Life’s workplaces.
What will you do?
Hands-on planning with our business partners to recommend appropriate virtual platforms, audio-visual and staging solutions. Completing the planning documentation, the rehearsal and event delivery of these planned services to ensure the seamless execution of the event agenda. Updating and improving department documentation and training team members on new processes
Advanced Technical operation of multiple virtual event platforms, broadcast and video equipment and integrations, multi-channel systems and video editing capabilities. Leading implementation of new technology, tools and systems into regular operation, supporting other team members as required
Utilization of advanced department systems and organizational practices, documenting KPIs and recommending efficiencies and opportunities for the department
Contribution to the evolution of the venue and virtual service operations, Research, recommendation and processes to learn new equipment, systems and platforms
Leading role in implementation projects. Lead partners with flexible, solution focused customer service skills to quickly adapt, resolve and trouble-shoot technical problems or late-breaking customer needs
Oversite of assigned venue AV system operations, managing systems and completing tasks for ongoing maintenance checks, break-fix responses, and completing regular, equipment and inventory resourcing to department standards
Collaborative support for other team members, participating in site improvement projects, cross training and the overall strengthening of our service operations
Supervision of other technicians, vendors and service providers, providing coaching and direction as required
Adhere to company policies and industry best practices for the technical processes, pre, during and post-events
Commitment to continuous improvement with the aim of making processes as efficient as possible, while delivering quality results
Occasional travel is required
What you need to succeed?
You have 5+ years of professional audio-visual technical expertise in a corporate event environment
You’re a well-accomplished event technician with honed skills and track record of troubleshooting under pressure, knowledgeable with a wide range of media, platforms and venues, regularly working in close collaboration with event planning, and multimedia teams
You have excellent customer service and communication skills and can put partners, executives and colleagues at ease in high-pressure situations
You have expert industry knowledge of equipment, systems and terminology, with advanced technological operational abilities. This may include expert knowledge of AV and Broadcast systems such as video conference hardware & software endpoints, hardware & software video switchers (Newtek Tricasters, Blackmagic ATEMs, Wirecast, Vmix), Virtual Event Platforms (Zoom, MSTeams, Workplace, Webcast Canada, as well as expertise in the MS Office Suite, Adobe creative Suite
Demonstratable intuitiveness and ability to adapt and learn a wide range of new platforms, production systems, equipment and integrations as technology evolves
You build strong business relationships with stakeholders, vendors, staff, and team members; you’ve got a strong ability to negotiate and resolve issues smoothly and effectively
You’ve got expertise leading partners, suppliers and teams to deliver high quality work. You can lead and manage other team members, training and coaching them to success with partners. Navigating tight timelines, unexpected deliverables and business pressures to deliver the best possible experience

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
