The Human Pain Genetics Lab – McGill University – seeks a definite-term part time Research Assistant position skilled UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator able to install, configure and manage server grade Linux systems hardware and to ensure access security, available storage, computing power and appropriate backup to support the needs of the Lab. The successful candidate will maintain and “scale-out” the IT infrastructure of the Lab. This infrastructure includes hundreds of terabytes of data storage for genetic sequencing instruments, public databases, a number of HPC servers, managed business data, networking and firewall hardware, etc.
The ideal candidate will possess a majority of the following attributes:
Knowledge and expertise in UNIX systems administration, with emphasis on Linux
Knowledge of systems administration tools and languages, such as Perl, Python, C, PHP
Strong shell scripting skills
Expertise in installation, management and use of software such as compilers, scientific applications, network access clients, etc
Knowledge and expertise in technologies such as TCP/IP and related protocols; networked file systems, including NFS, CIFS/SMB
Knowledge of directory services, authentication/authorization systems; LDAP, Active Directory and their associated technologies, PAM, Kerberos, etc.
Expertise building and managing database systems, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MySQL
Expertise in securing sensitive data, knowledge of best-practice policies and methods
Knowledge of networking technologies such as ethernet switching, VLAN, NAT, WAN management, hardware-based and host-based firewalls, etc
Familiarity with the hardware and software of mass storage systems including RAID, LVM, SAS, tape devices, etc
Knowledge of virtualization technologies such as KVM, Docker/CoreOS
Very strong problem solving skills and time management skills.
Written and verbal communication skills in English
Master and 3+ years of professional experience, or equivalent.
