Background: The Food Development Centre (FDC) is seeking an experienced Food Protein Processing Scientist to work within the extraction and separation business line to lead the development of animal and plant-based proteins. FDC is a Special Operating Agency of Manitoba Agriculture and conducts industry-driven research and development projects to transform agricultural commodities into value-added ingredients and products for commercialization on a fee-for-service basis. FDC has pilot plant facilities which allow companies to use the Centre as a food business incubator to develop, produce and market their products. Any food type can potentially be manufactured and staff are expected to participate in food tasting (sensory evaluation). The client base ranges from entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to large firms, located in Canada and across the globe.

Duties: Responsibilities and duties include developing and testing new ingredients, with emphasis on protein chemistry and extraction and separation processes. You will have hands-on experience and demonstrated proficiency in a pilot plant and industry setting, be able to work at off-site locations providing technical consulting to clients; collect and analyze pertinent research data for process scale-up and optimization; preparation of project costing, quotes and formal project reports; process troubleshooting and technology transfer. This role will participate and lead cross-functional project teams in project structuring, timeline development, execution, and risk management of projects, ensuring projects deliver on quality, on budget and on time.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a minimum of M.Sc. in Food Science, Chemical, Biosystems or other related engineering disciplines, with at least three years’ experience in applied research and development in the food industry relating to extraction and separation technologies. Knowledge of protein chemistry and processing is desired. Excellent communication, leadership, organization and problem-solving skills, and the ability to develop strong working relationships are required, as well as the ability to liaise with appropriate Government departments and industry. Project management and lean manufacturing experience will be considered assets.
