This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Division Head, the Clinical Assistant functions as a member of the Medical Oncology team, liaising with pharmacy staff, nursing, house staff, attending staff, patient’s families and other members of the health care team in the development and implementation of the overall patient care plan both in the inpatient and outpatient settings on a daily basis. Clinical responsibilities will include but are not limited to completing admissions, providing daily assessment and active management of inpatients including writing medical orders on charts, handling of urgent or emergent situations in the chemotherapy area, arranging consultations with other departments for care, laboratory and radiologic investigations; minor procedures and discharge summaries, attending out-patient Neuro-Oncology and Genitourinary oncology clinics on a weekly basis, all under the supervision of the Medical Oncology Attending Staff. The procedures include but are not limited to performing thoracenteses or paracentesis. In any and all of the above, the Assistant will not proceed until full training and competence has been established with sign off by the Division Head or his/her designate. This is a teaching hospital with varying degrees of participation from medical students, residents and hematology fellows. The Clinical Assistant will be encouraged to attend and participate in appropriate educational and academic activities within the Division of Medical Oncology, including Medical Oncology Grand Rounds, Cancer Site Team Rounds (e.g.: Thoracic, GI, Breast), monthly Mortality & Morbidity rounds, journal clubs, etc. The Division of Medical Oncology recognizes the importance of continuing medical education for all of its members and Clinical Assistants. The Clinical Assistant may have the opportunity of attending appropriate medical conferences where funding is available Candidate must be able to make sound decisions and communicate effectively.

These responsibilities are meant to be indicative of the job responsibilities and duties and are not inclusive. Performance evaluations will be conducted bi-annually by the Department Head or Site Lead and annually reviewed with the Zone Medical Executive Director. Failure to meet performance standards will result in termination.

Qualifications

  • Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeon of Nova Scotia (http://cpsns.ns.ca/definedlicense.aspx)
  • Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeon of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline
  • CMPA coverage required
  • ACLS certification required
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
  • Prior experience in the area of Internal Medicine/Medical Oncology is an asset
  • Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
  • Mental and Visual demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations

Hours of Work

  • Temporary full-time position; 96 hours biweekly
  • Beginning April 23, 2019, with an anticipated end date of January 1, 2020 (approx. 8 months)

Salary Information

$44.9779 - $57.2903 hourly
