This role is open to people in and around Calgary and Edmonton, AB, as the work is completed at job sites around the area.
Key Responsibilities
- Directly supervise and lead a crew of electricians, technicians, and laborers on substation construction, maintenance, and upgrade projects.
- Oversee day-to-day field operations including installation of transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, buswork, grounding systems, cabling, and control panels.
- Ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Alberta OHS regulations, Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and client/utility standards.
- Conduct daily toolbox talks, safety inspections, and hazard assessments; enforce safe work practices and PPE usage.
- Coordinate crew activities with other trades, subcontractors, and site management to maintain project schedule.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications to ensure accurate installation and assembly.
- Perform quality control checks and assist with testing and commissioning of substation equipment.
- Mentor and train junior crew members on best practices, tools, and safety procedures.
- Track daily progress, material usage, and report issues or delays to the Substation Supervisor.
- Maintain accurate site documentation, time sheets, and as-built records.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in substation or high-voltage electrical construction, with at least 2 years in a lead/hand foreman role.
- Valid Alberta Journeyman Electrician ticket (Red Seal preferred).
- Strong working knowledge of high-voltage equipment (69kV+), switching procedures, and substation construction methods.
- Proven ability to lead and motivate crews while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
- Thorough understanding of Alberta OHS Code and utility safety requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret complex electrical drawings and one-line diagrams.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and at heights.
- Post-secondary education or technical training in electrical systems is an asset.
