The Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Clinic is an academic and service unit within Toronto General Hospital serving the needs of entire Ontario. We are a unique one of its kind clinic for the province of Ontario therefore serving Ontarians for specialized programs and services such as diagnosis and management of hereditary connective tissue disorder of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS).

Our team includes several specialist physicians, residents and fellows, nurse practitioners, allied health, nursing and clerical staff. We work closely with other services including physiotherapy, exercise physiology, dietitian, and psychology as members of our interprofessional team.

UHN has developed comprehensive PA Medical Directives, a PA Council and leadership structure to assist PAs and their supervisors with on-boarding, organizational issues and support.

The Physician Assistant (PA) will be based at Toronto General Hospital and provide patient care in a team setting, both in ambulatory clinics and the inpatient unit. The PA will provide medical care to in-patients and clinic patients, providing assessments, investigations, symptom management and work with the team on disposition and follow-up plans. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities both at orientation and also at an ongoing basis, and will be expected to develop their potential as a leader and teacher in the program.

Principal responsibilities include utilizing and demonstrating a theoretical knowledge and advanced level of clinical competence and excellence in caring for patients. This involves collecting and interpreting data about the health of patients, symptom management, developing a medical diagnosis and management plan – in a team environment. The PA will play a vital role on the interprofessional team and will have quality improvement, research and administrative responsibilities. There will also be opportunities to participate in policy or clinical pathway development as well as education and professional development. The PA will interact with other team members including consulting physicians, other PAs, nurse practitioners, trainees (residents and fellows), nurses and other clinical and allied health staff. The PA will perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
At minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree in an accredited Physician Assistant program or recognized equivalent
Must be a Canadian Certified Physician Assistant (CCPA) and/or a American Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C)
Must be a current member of the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA)
Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills
Willingness to work with the supervising physician to adjust medical directives as needed and evolve the role to meet the patient/program needs
