OVERVIEW:
The Collections Specialist is responsible for processing and cataloguing library materials using both copy and original cataloguing techniques. This position ensures that the library's collection is catalogued accurately and kept current by applying a uniform application of standards and resource descriptions.
KEY TASKS
· Catalogue and classify new or existing materials using up to date library standards
· Create original bibliographic records when not provided by a vendor or available through copy cataloguing sources
· Import bibliographic records into the ILS and edit for consistency with the library’s cataloguing standards
· Assist with purchasing library materials and allocating the annual materials budget
· Organize workflow of catalogued materials
· Resolve database and access inconsistencies
· Provide circulation desk coverage when required
· Other duties as assigned
GENERAL DUTIES
- Answers telephones and responds to requests
- Operates all aspects of circulation desk
- Shelving & overall maintenance of library material and library shelves
- Assists patrons with electronic resource requirements (databases, e-book, e-magazines, e-audio book transfers)
- Photocopying, computer/printer assistance
- Provides reader’s advisory services
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
· Previous library experience required
· Library Technician diploma preferred
· Previous experience in copy and original cataloguing preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· Communicates effectively and enthusiastically with co-workers and members of the public
· Knowledgeable of cataloging technical standards such as MARC coding, RDA, AACR2, FRBR, Library of Congress subject headings, and Dewey Decimal Classification system
· Possesses skills to use computer technology including integrated library systems, mobile devices, and software to carry out and complete assigned tasks
· Employs analytical, organizational, and communication skills (written and oral) with the ability to problem solve and be highly productive
· Manages time efficiently and carries out duties in an organized manner with an attention to detail
· Knowledgeable of the library’s resources, both physical and digital
