Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Dean for the Centre of Teaching, Learning, and Innovation (CTLI), the Educational Development Specialist provides leadership to support and enhance good teaching, scholarly teaching, and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) at Lethbridge College.

As a member of the Educational Development team, the Educational Development Specialist maintains a dynamic portfolio of services, projects, and research based on instructor and institutional need. The work of the Educational Development team is grounded in evidence informed practice and is focused on teaching and learning excellence.

The Educational Development Specialist works collaboratively with instructors, the CTLI and a range of program and service units to provide vision and leadership in planning, developing and implementing a variety of initiatives designed to support teaching and learning experiences for instructors in all learning environments.

The Educational Development Specialist must thrive on working effectively and efficiently in a team based, collaborative, fast paced environment and demonstrate the ability to be innovative and focused on excellence, and research informed, evidence-based practice. Strong project management, decision making, interpersonal and relationship building skills are essential.

Job Duties
  • Champions good teaching, scholarly teaching, and SoTL.
  • Works to enhance student learning, and the reputation of Lethbridge College by demonstrating institutional commitment to excellence in student learning.
  • Provides advice and recommendations to instructors and other campus stakeholders regarding best practices in teaching and learning; remains current in emerging teaching practices, including technology use.
  • Identifies and leads new educational development projects, initiatives, and partnership opportunities; liaises with a variety of academic and service departments on projects to ensure smooth implementation.
  • Remains responsive to instructor needs by completing needs assessments, developing new services, and evaluating services to determine impact.
  • Follows and remains current in the best practices of educational development.
  • Works to elevate SoTL and scholarly teaching at the provincial, national, and international levels.
  • Leads and/or attends Educational Development related project/committee meetings.
  • Leads the design, development, and implementation of the educational development service portfolio.
  • Creates materials in both print and online formats to share knowledge about effective teaching practices and SoTL research.
  • Provides consultation and mentors instructors to encourage growth through reflective practice.
  • Provides consultation and mentors instructors and staff with SoTL research projects (e.g. research questions, lit review, methods, ethics applications).
  • Plans and facilitates instructor development through workshops, training sessions, and courses.
  • Maintains the portfolio of services and projects in alignment with present and emerging campus needs. Completes needs assessments as required.
  • Evaluates service offerings to make formative improvements and to identify impacts.
  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), research-informed pedagogies, and educational development approaches and practices.
  • Initiates and conducts primary and secondary research to support college teaching and learning activities; considers the needs of the CTLI strategic plan, and the Lethbridge College Comprehensive Institutional Plan.
  • Collaborates with faculty/staff when appropriate, to build research capacity.
  • Authors educational and research-based abstracts, proposals, journal articles, and briefings to support sharing/dissemination of findings.
  • Presents research and initiatives at local, provincial, national, and international conferences.
Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of master’s degree (in any discipline) is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching/facilitation experience in a post-secondary education context.
  • Familiarity with the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), educational development and passion for evidence-based teaching approaches and practices.
  • Experience with all phases of research projects in an academic environment, from development of research questions to dissemination and/or scholarly publications (e.g. data collection, data analysis, writing literature reviews, ethics applications, grant applications).
  • Proven leadership experience; ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision; well-developed organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in order to deal with complex tasks.

  • Experience with designing faculty programming and opportunities.
