Quality Lead Product Development

Job Summary:

The Quality Lead Product Development will be responsible for quality monitoring and quality control on cannabis production processes related to product development in strict compliance with the Cannabis Act and other applicable regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Extrapolates sample processing procedures into commercial processing SOPs that assure control, compliance, reproducibility and reliability of cannabis processing, manufacturing of goods and testing processes
  • Develop data management and record keeping for cannabis processing within the edibles and beverages product development and manufacturing spaces
  • Write and review documentation appropriate for Good Production Practice (GPP) and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that will accompany operational requirements for cannabis licensed production facilities that are compliant with Health Canada regulations
  • Supports the Quality Director and Regulatory Manager in Health Canada inquiries, inspections, and audits
  • Maintain working knowledge of all current regulatory changes within the industry and ensure processes are adjusted and communicated as necessary
  • Develop and optimize Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for manufacturing and processing; ensure all SOPs remain up-to-date and are reviewed on a regular basis
  • Provide guidance to R&D staff on any regulatory compliance issues
  • Comply with document handling policies and controls in the company’s ERP inventory tracking system
  • Monitors and controls product quality both of finished product and of process materials
  • Establish and maintain all quality systems, procedures, and policies and manage the activities of the quality department for the beverages and edibles division
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and customer audits including SFCA, HACCP, SQF, AIB, GMP and others as they arise and act as the location HACCP coordinator and SQF Practitioner
  • Authorized to release product, issue certificate of analysis, initiate recall procedures, and recommend corrective actions
  • Perform all duties safely, display safety leadership, cultivate a zero-incident safety culture, and comply with all government and corporate safety requirements
  • Plan, organize, and work under minimum supervision, provide analytical and troubleshooting assistance to the operations department, highlight deviations, collaborate and communicate effectively with various departments and managers, establish effective and open interpersonal relations, and perform related duties as required
  • Identify and address operational and procedural improvement opportunities through evaluation of laboratory data, organizing and reporting such data, and recommending action to be taken by department managers
  • Manage and maintain the physical assets of the laboratory in good working condition to allow efficient operations, compliance with regulatory and corporate policies, and promote workplace quality
  • New supplier qualification and on-boarding
  • Ingredient receiving protocol
  • Devise and implement a lot coding system
  • Devise and implement a tech package filing system


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or associated degree
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in QA in a food production environment
  • Experience with instituting and managing one or more of the following programs: SFCR, BRC, or SQF, AIB
  • Experience creating technical documents, i.e. specifications, nutritionals for manufactured goods, process flow documents
  • Experience handling customer complaints and recalls
  • Experience with instituting and managing a HACCP program for food manufacturing
  • Familiarity with kosher and halal
  • Experience with NHP, Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verification, NSF, APIs, Lean Six Sigma is considered an asset
