The Tuberculosis (TB) Public Health Nurse (PHN) works within Public Health, CDC & Screening, Primary Care Alberta, and reports to the Manager of the Edmonton Tuberculosis Clinic. The TB PHN plays a key role in the planning, implementation, and coordination of TB services across the Edmonton Zone. Using the nursing process, the PHN delivers comprehensive TB services, including screening, case management of active tuberculosis disease and latent tuberculosis infection, outbreak investigation, contact tracing, surveillance, and education. The TB PHN serves as a resource to healthcare providers and community partners throughout the Edmonton Zone, including Public Health Centres, Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), Infection Prevention and Control, physicians, community agencies, and the general public. The role requires collaboration with clients, families, healthcare teams, and community stakeholders to support effective TB prevention, treatment, and management. Key responsibilities include dispensing and administering anti-tuberculosis medications through Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) and Video Observed Therapy (VOT); monitoring, evaluating, and documenting medication effectiveness; and identifying signs and symptoms of adverse medication reactions. The PHN also conducts TB screening and detection activities, including tuberculin skin testing, health assessments, vision testing, sputum collection, and other laboratory specimen collection. Additional responsibilities include performing vital sign assessments, providing verbal and written client education, and conducting home visits to support clients in the community. This role provides services to a diverse client population, including individuals from inner-city communities and those with complex medical, social, and socioeconomic needs, using an equitable and client-centered approach.

Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Recent tuberculosis (TB) experience within the last three years is required. Recent experience triaging and managing referrals is also essential. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical judgment and the ability to assess and manage complex TB and public health cases. A solid understanding of TB screening practices, treatment regimens, and the public health implications of tuberculosis is required, along with recent experience providing consultation, guidance, and education to healthcare providers and the public. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, with the ability to educate, counsel, and effectively engage clients from diverse backgrounds, including individuals with complex medical and social needs. The successful candidate must be able to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment. An N95 fit test is required. Physical demands of the position include maintaining prolonged postures and frequent operation of clinical equipment. The role involves standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping, reaching, and carrying loads of up to 20 lbs. Responsibilities may include patient handling activities such as transfers, repositioning, and CPR as well as transporting supplies and equipment for off-site contact investigations when required. The ability to perform repetitive computer-based tasks and maintain accurate electronic documentation is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in infectious diseases and community-based care is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate knowledge of TB transmission, diagnostic testing, treatment protocols, and public health principles in an ambulatory care setting. Experience in case management, client and family education, and collaboration within multidisciplinary teams supporting individuals affected by infectious diseases is considered an asset.
