Reporting to the Manager, Parts & Inventory this position is responsible to individually conduct and provide parts technical analysis guidance to a team of analysts in an effort to support the management of SMS inventory, branch performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
The team lead will be responsible for understanding and providing guidance as it pertains to company parts policies and procedures. This position will also be responsible for proactively researching, recommending and implementing new processes and procedures related to parts management across the organization. This position is to independently lead continuous improvement projects as it pertains to parts inventory, business partner support initiatives and process development.
Responsible for activities as they relate to Parts Department report development, maintenance and the measurement of Parts Department performance including:
Works with the management team to develop annual objectives for parts department efficiencies and monitors progress and results.
Provides parts technical support to branch operations and internal teams which include items such as clarification on SMS policies and procedures, work instructions on transactions within our ERP, etc.
Independently provides guidance and mentorship to a team of technical analysts to develop and support company goals and objectives while also managing their own assigned portfolio.
Helps to onboard and train new analysts.
Provides team guidance and feedback on specific tasks and projects lead by the technical analysts.
Provides transactional guidance on corporate projects and business growth strategies.
Creates and manages an RPL (recommended parts lists) database to support new production introduction, bid packages and continued machine maintenance to support branches with their internal stocking strategies and customer support.
Participates in the management of customer bid package development and analysis to support market response initiatives and growth.
Supports and reviews the corporate stocking strategy between key manufacturers, their regional distribution and SMS branch operations.
Analyzes and recommends medium to long term plans for investments to support business strategies. Assigns and supports the team in the achievement of these initiatives.
Evaluates the parts inventory control systems and makes recommendations to the Manager, Parts and Inventory on ways to improve the day to day systems.
Works with the Manager, Parts and Inventory and operations to develop policy and procedures for the Parts and Inventory function of the company. Identifies appropriate classification of documents (ie. policies/procedures/work instructions) and corresponding storage locations.
Collaborates with corporate technical training team on development and maintenance of training documentation.
Develops strategies and supports in the management of Third-Party Logistic partners as well as the overall management of centralized corporate inventory including adherence to budget, annual inventory counts, etc.
Participates/leads various meetings with Branch Parts Managers and Business Partners/Manufacturers to communicate and direct parts distributions practices in accordance to policy and guidelines to achieve consistent practices throughout the company and to ensure that company objectives are being achieved.
Develops procedures and instructs branches on warehouse and parts department functions to ensure consistency across all SMS branches.
Accountable for vendor management as it pertains to key manufacturers/business partners including part returns, lead time analysis, vendor strategy, stewardship review, etc.
Orders and monitors inventory for corporate parts support.
Ensures proper systems maintenance for parts master files and quality control.
Maintains consignment inventory data base and contract adherence.
Undertakes and leads special parts analysis projects meant to understand and improve level of parts support.
Acts as a solutions provider and a source for general parts support and process training.

Position requires 5–10 years related parts technical and inventory experience within the heavy equipment sector. A parts technician certification from an accredited institution is considered an asset, as is branch operations experience.
Knowledge of parts distribution, technical functionality and inventory management.
Ability to manage individual assignments while providing guidance and mentorship to a team.
Ability to multi-task in a busy environment with great attention to detail.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of individuals and groups.

Familiarity with the use of MS Power BI would be considered an advantage.
