Temporary Assignment -approximately 54 weeks
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton, the Research Contracts & Legal Officer is responsible for review, draft, and negotiation of legally binding (clinical) research contracts and agreements with industrial, non-profit, academic, hospital and other partners and service providers; responsible for providing guidance related to current or proposed contracts in relation to regulatory and legal obligations and potential risk exposure; and, responsible for providing educational opportunities to clinical researchers and research staff.
Bachelor’s Degree in related field required
Master's Degree in Legal/Risk Management preferred
Three to five years practical and related experience working with contracts
Experience in review, drafting and negotiation of research contracts with institutions both inside & outside Canada
Experience in clinical research and a working knowledge of laws, regulations and guidelines relevant to clinical research and research involving humans
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to develop good working relationships with multiple stakeholders
Strong negotiating, interpersonal and communication skills
Certification as a clinical research coordinator or clinical research associate an asset
Professional Affiliation with ACRP, SOCRA, CAURA, or SRA an asset
Must be able to work independently with minimal direction
Proficient with computer systems and software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook)
Reviews all research contracts and agreements for to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines and institutional and researcher requirements while protecting researcher and research participant rights
Coordinates administration of contracts and grants with Research Administration Team, Research Ethics Board and others as required
Liaises with both corporate industry and non-industry research partners to facilitate contract execution and negotiates changes as required. Communication with multiple contract stakeholders
Consults with hospital's insurer and legal advisor as necessary
Conducts risk assessment with each clinical trial or other research agreement to ensure adequate insurance coverage and indemnification
Drafts agreements where required. Develops template agreements where required.
Providing ongoing educational opportunities to the research community
May be required to develop and provide educational sessions for researchers and research staff at the Research Institute at St. Joe’s - Hamilton and external attendees related to contracts, regulations, standard operating procedures and other related research topics as directed by Executive Director
Performs cross-functional support and/or other duties consistent with the research administration team functions as assigned. This may include, but is not limited to: provide support for VP Research and the Executive Director of the Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton in corporate initiatives and projects; vacation/illness coverage for research administration team members; and, serve on internal committees
