Responsibilities

The Community Development Leader (CDL) is responsible for creating a supportive community within Platt’s Lane Estates (PLE). The CDL will plan and facilitate programs that meet the needs of the PLE community. The incumbent must be self-motivated, have strong leadership and organizational skills, and require little supervision. Demonstrated initiative and an understanding of Student Development Theory and curriculum design is preferred. Under the supervision of the Associate Director, Residence Engagement, the CDL’s responsibilities are to:

1. Respond to identified community needs by developing, organizing, and delivering social and educational, and needs-based programs for the community.

  • Assess the needs of a diverse community while considering the age and demographic of tenants and their families.
  • Respond to the needs identified in PLE by developing, organizing and delivering social, educational and needs-based programs.
  • Work with the University Apartments CDL to develop large-scale, community-wide programs (e.g. Tenant Appreciation BBQ, New Tenant Meet and Greet, and the Niagara Falls Trip).
  • Create a programming plan each month, in consultation with the Associate Director, Residence Engagement.
  • Keep a program database to review, revise, update, and evaluate current programs.
  • Regularly update information in PLE advertising spaces.
  • Provide assistance to OREP programs and initiatives when needed.
  • Work closely with the Programming Coordinators; Associate Director, Residence Engagement; Director, Facilities; Associate Director, Client Services & Recruitment; Coordinator, Western Apartments; Rental Office Clerks; and the Off-Campus Housing Office to identify and deliver key messages and educational programs for tenants.
2. Promote involvement and engagement within the community.

  • Serve as a resource of information about programs and options available on campus, or seek out appropriate information.
  • Encourage engagement of PLE tenants by involving them in the planning of programs, and on-campus leadership and service learning opportunities.
  • Understand and leverage resources available (Programming Coordinators, Associate Directors, USC, other campus partners).
  • Manage the PLE Volunteer Council and its members, who assist with programming, attend regular meetings, and identify community needs from a tenant perspective.
  • Monitor the ‘Platt’s Lane Estates Community’ Facebook group to oversee tenant communications, share important messaging, and promote PLE programs.
3. Communicate effectively to build awareness around upcoming events and important operational dates.

  • Ensure tenants are aware of upcoming important operational dates based on community needs (lease renewing, childcare application dates, etc).
  • Communicate positively and directly with tenants, the PLE Rental Office, and the Associate Director, Residence Engagement
  • Refer and direct tenant concerns regarding facilities and other Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) issues to the Rental Office.
  • Collaborate with Housing & Ancillary Services Marketing team to develop a seasonal tenant newsletter to promote events and relay important information.
  • Communicate with the Housing & Ancillary Services Marketing team to advertise upcoming events and programs within PLE utilizing various communication methods (posters, social media, etc.).
  • Attend all meetings on a regular basis and submit all administrative paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Be supportive of programs conducted by fellow colleagues and campus partners by assisting, promoting, and attending these programs when needed.
  • Consistently work with campus and residence partners to develop a strong team and to be aware of programs and events.
4. Act as a role model of respect for self, others, and the community.

  • Refrain from behaviours that would undermine your position of leadership.
  • Respect the dignity and diversity of each tenant and encourage the same from others.
  • Abide by community standards (RTA, University Apartment Handbook).
  • Create an inclusive atmosphere and promote a sense of belonging for each PLE tenant.
  • Maintain confidentiality about job-related issues.
  • Complete risk assessments to ensure safety and security is properly considered while programming and event planning.
  • Attend all mandatory training sessions, including the Leadership & Development Conference in August and Just In Time workshops in the fall and spring terms.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Background in Residence Life or Community Development preferred
  • Knowledge of student development theory and curriculum development is preferred
  • Knowledge of family and child development theory
  • Event planning experience
  • Standard First Aid Certificate
MEASUREMENTS:
  • Demonstrated understanding of the University Apartment Handbook
  • Adherence to all written and verbal protocols established by the Associate Director, Residence Engagement and the Division of Housing and Ancillary Services
  • Punctual and regular participation and attendance at all meetings
  • Prepared and thoughtful participation in regular meetings with Associate Director, Residence Engagement
  • Achievement of community development goals
  • Thorough and timely completion of administrative duties (e.g. tenant communication, newsletter, log sheets, expense reimbursement forms)
  • Effective communication with fellow colleagues, tenants and the Associate Director, Residence Engagement
  • Timely and comprehensive submission of weekly completed log sheets, management of the CDL budget, and other administrative paperwork
  • Timely and comprehensive submission of plans and handouts for programs and events
  • Timely and comprehensive management of the CDL Transition Manual
  • Engaged attendance at meetings (colleagues, Associate Director, Residence Engagement, tenants, etc.)
  • Sharing of program templates with other areas
  • Development and implementation of new, large scale, community-wide programming initiatives
  • Actively promote Western University and London support services
  • Delivery of programming expectations as laid out above
  • Ability to appropriately assess community needs
The CDL must be able to manage a flexible work schedule and accommodate for occasional work weeks that are longer than the average 10-15 hours. The CDL must be available to work during events they have scheduled during evenings and weekends.
