Heavy Equipment Operator

Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Operator to join our growing construction team. This role involves the operation of a variety of heavy machinery on roadbuilding, infrastructure, excavation, aggregate, bridge, and civil construction projects. Successful candidates will be adaptable, team-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality work while maintaining a strong focus on safety and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate excavators, loaders, dozers, rollers, skid steers, graders, and other heavy equipment as required.
- Perform earthmoving, excavation, grading, trenching, backfilling, and site development activities.
- Support the construction of roads, bridges, culverts, drainage systems, and municipal infrastructure projects.
- Read and interpret site plans, grades, stakes, elevations, and construction drawings.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance concerns or safety hazards.
- Maintain equipment in proper working condition and ensure work areas remain clean and organized.
- Assist other crew members and participate in general labour duties when required.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Complete additional tasks as assigned to support project objectives.
Qualifications & Experience
- Previous experience operating heavy equipment in the civil construction, roadbuilding, or infrastructure industry.
- Experience with excavation, utility installation, drainage work, aggregate production, or site preparation projects.
- Strong understanding of safe operating procedures and jobsite safety practices.
- Class 1 or Class 3 Driver’s License is considered a strong asset.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

- First Aid / CPR
- WHMIS
- Fall Protection
- Traffic Control / Flagger Training
- Confined Space Entry
- Heavy Equipment Operator Certification (asset)
Skills & Abilities
- Precision excavation and grading.
- Installation of culverts, utilities, and drainage systems.
- Fine grading, ditch shaping, and slope finishing.
- Safe and efficient loading of trucks and materials handling.
- Ability to work from plans, grades, profiles, and GPS machine control systems.
- Experience with Topcon, Trimble, or Leica GPS systems is considered an asset.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to operate multiple types of equipment and assist where needed.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work in varying weather and site conditions.
- Travel may be required to project locations throughout Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.
- Accommodations and Living Out Allowance (LOA) may be available for eligible out-of-town assignments.
- Overtime, weekend work, and extended hours may be required during busy construction periods.

Pay: $30.00-$35.00 per hour
