Assistant Controller
CALTRAX is a full service independent railcar repair company providing service in Western Canada from two facilities located in Calgary and Raymond Alberta. We provide full service tank and freight car maintenance and repair, interior lining and cleaning, blast and paint.
The Assistant Controller shall hold responsibility for managing the overall financial operations of the company and will provide accurate and timely information to the CAD Executive and Board of Directors. This shall include analysis, budgeting, forecasting and financial report preparation. This position will direct and lead the companies accounting activities; including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures and preparing financial statements. The Assistant Controller shall also act as a partner to other members of senior management to help improve operational efficiency and achieve strategic goals. This is a hands on position for a small company.
Responsibilities Include:
- Manage all accounts, ledger and financial reporting for the company in compliance with the appropriate accounting standards and regulatory requirements
- Prepare monthly reporting package including financial statements and related working papers, accruals, and monthly journal entries
- Manage the development, implementation and maintenance of financial accounting policies, systems and internal controls
- Provide timely, relevant and accurate reporting & analysis of performance against historical, budgeted, forecasted and strategic results to facilitate informed decision-making
- Develop Key Performance Indicators in conjunction with the General Manager
- Identify cost efficiencies and growth opportunities in the organization
- Manage the budgets process by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data and making recommendations
- Maintain efficient cash and credit management
- Establish and maintain internal controls to support financial infrastructure and protect assets
- Monitor financial condition by conducting audits; providing information to external auditors
- Support and supervise Accounts receivables and Accounts payable activities
- Review and validate payroll accuracy
- Provide coaching, counseling, and performance management for department employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results
- Maintain professional knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business with Accounting Designation
- 2 – 5 years progressive accounting and previous supervisory experience
- Thorough understanding of accounting principles and procedures
- Must be self motivated to complete excellent standard of work
- Advanced computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office Excel, Word, Outlook
- Excellent people manager, open to direction and collaboration; Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
