What responsibilities will you have in this role?
Reporting to Director, Research and Innovation, the Manager, Industry Liaison and Business Development identifies and secures externally funded applied research work for the College and ensures and facilitates the successful delivery of applied research projects and related technical projects for George Brown College (GBC).
Identifies prospective industry, community and government partners with innovation needs that align with the capablities of the College, and cultivates and maintains relationships with appropriate stakeholders within these organizations.
Monitors opportunities in external environment, funders, government strategies, industry and community partners to identify applied research interests and needs.
Identifies research and technical services opportunities which will contribute to financial investment in GBC’s Research & Innovation programs, excellence in student learning and GBC’s reputation.
Attends events, conferences, meetings of strategic importance to Research & Innovaiton at GBC to network with potential partners and represent the business interests of GBC Research & Innovation.
Plans, manages and hosts events, which attract private and public sector partners to GBC and speaks at external and internal events, conferences, meetings, etc. about GBC’s Reseaerch & Innovation services and capacity.
Works collaboratively with the Research & Innovation Knowledge Transfer Coordinator and the marketing department to develop/maintain marketing materials, including web and social media content.
Maintains a strong network within the Ontario innovation system, including but not limited to MarS, Venture Lab, OCE, the City of Toronto and other colleges, universities and research institutes.
Develops opportunities for collaborative applied research projects with small-and medium-sized private enterprises (SME), industry, community and government partners.
Works closely with Research & Innovation technical teams to ensure technical capability and capacity fit.
Works collaboratively with partners and Research & Innovation staff to develop funding proposals and introduces industry partners to appropriate partners within the local innovation system, such as IRAP or a Regional Innovation Centre.
Assists in negotiating research contracts, terms of agreements, and protects faculty and the college’s intellectual property rights.
Estimates, tracks and develops sales plans for Research & Innovation services to the private and public sectors.
Works with project management to develop applied research plans and on reporting to funders.
Provides client relationship management services and client project evaluation/satisfaction.
Participates in Research & Innovation Strategic Planning.
Other related duties as assigned.
What qualifications do you need for this role?
Minimum Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, such as an MBA, or similar degree in a related field preferred.
Five years of experience in business development is required; preferably in a research environment.
Demonstrated leadership and success in business development, including establishing and meeting business development goals and targets, successful negotiation and execution of contract required.
Demonstrated excellence and success in developing and writing research grant proposals.
Excellent project development and project management skills, preferably PM designation such as a PMP.
Knowledgeable about the research funding environment and federal and provincial sources.
Familiar with research design, methodology and policies; highly skilled in proposal writing.
Demonstrated ability/success leading and working with individuals and groups from the government, private and public sectors on collaborative projects.
Exceptional verbal and oral communication skills, interpersonal and collaborative relationship building skills.
Excellent customer services skills.
Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of a high performing team, including having experience building and growing teams.
Superior organizational, planning and time management skills are required.
Ability to travel frequently.
Demonstrated leadership in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College.
Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles.
Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
