As one of the core areas of our practice, Immigration law continues to be one of our major areas of expertise. We provide immigration services and representation to wide array of individual and corporate clients. As we grow our clientele and expand into new markets, we are seeking the services of experienced and qualified Immigration Legal Assistants to join our dedicated team.
The ideal candidate is one who has vast experience in working within the immigration space and is very knowledgeable on the provisions and workings of the Canadian immigration system. The candidate must also possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, pays attention to detail and be culturally sensitive.
Responsibilities
- Providing support and assistance to our Immigration Lawyers and Consultant in the area of preparing legal documents, reviewing case file, and preparation of immigration application forms.
- Setting up application profiles with both Federal and Provincial immigration application streams.
- Communicating with the clients and preparing draft correspondence for review by lawyers and consultant.
- Filing and service of immigration applications and appeals at the Federal Court and the Immigration and Refugee board of Canada (IRB).
- Attend meetings and hearing at court and IRB take notes and minutes.
- Proof reading and review documents and correspondence, to ensure adherence to our firm’s practice guidelines.
- Conducting legal research on varying immigration matters including case law and immigration legislation.
- Maintain a proper filing system to ensure ease of management of immigration files and to maintain confidentiality.
- Manage the office calendar and scheduling system to ensure that appointments, meetings, engagements are properly diarized to avoid clashes.
- Manage information flow by fielding phone calls and emails.
- Attend meetings, take notes and briefs, and prepare minute of meetings.
- Stay well-informed of changes in immigration laws and regulations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or College/CEGEP.
- Previous study in law or paralegal training will be a major asset.
- Proven work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal, in immigration, is an asset.
Languages: English. Proficiency and working knowledge in other major West African Languages (Yoruba, Ibo or Hausa) is a significant asset.
