- Possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License (Class F is preferred and recommended)

Activity Assistant
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Activity Supervisor.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The purpose of the Activity Assistant position is to assist the Activity Supervisor with Programs and Resident Services, Students in placement, Volunteer Services, Religious and Spiritual Services, Family Council and Residents Council. The employee will assist in administrative and operational services to the Activity Department.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Functions:
- Participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating a wide range of programs in the home including but not limited to 1:1, small groups and special events that meet the social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and intellectual needs of the residents.
- Participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating new and/or modified programs according to resident needs.
- Assist in organizing and facilitating community outings according to resident needs.
- Actively and effectively facilitate programs in the home during days, evening, and weekend from which the residents may select their interests and capabilities.
- Hours of work may be subject to change, depending on the programs developed for the life enrichment of the residents of the home.
- Assist in completing resident assessments and establish goals and interventions based on the residents’ identified needs and problems.
- Assist in completing documentation related to programming including but not limited to assessments, participation, progress notes, care plans and quarterly reviews within the MDS RAI program.
- Support and effectively utilize volunteer resources in the provision of programs assisting in volunteer services and acting as liaison with community volunteer organizations.
- Support Pastoral Care Services including spiritual and religious programs, memorial services, and palliative care by responding to the religious needs and interests of the residents.
- Appropriately utilize and assist in maintaining department supplies and resources.
- Participate in the homes Continuous Quality Improvement Program including but not limited to the completion of audits and ongoing program evaluations.
- Be aware of Workplace Hazardous Material Information System
Communications Functions:
- Ensure effective communication with all residents, family members, staff, and volunteers.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team including but not limited to residents, family, nursing, dietary, environmental, restorative care, therapy services and volunteers.
- Effectively communicate and assist in promotion of all programs offered by the home through creation of posters, advertisements, calendars, and facility newsletter.
- Assist in public relations by setting up information displays and providing the media with current information about Iroquois Lodge activities.
- Seek opportunities to collaborate with other therapy programs i.e. pet therapy, music therapy, art therapy and to connect the home with the community.
- Represent Six Nations Administration and community in a positive, courteous, cooperative, and professional manner: providing information and assistance.
- Complete correspondences and required briefing notes to maintain all communication. Assist with resident council and family council, promoting both.
Administrative Functions:
- Performs work functions in accordance and be familiar with Six Nations Elected Council policies, procedures, and practices.
- Ensure submission of documents to supervisors as required.
- Participate in multidisciplinary care conferences, resident council and family council meetings when required.
- Maintain awareness of changes within the profession and seek continual educational opportunities to attend schooling, training, workshops, and conferences as required.
- Ensure proper filing of documentation electronically and/or hardcopy.
- Assist in completing audits and ongoing program evaluations which help maintain the Continuous Quality Improvement Program
- Complete weekly accounts payable in the absence of the activation supervisor
- Process internal/external mail and/or electronic mail in a timely fashion.
- Attend monthly committee meeting for Ministry mandatory committees.
- Attend and give input at monthly departmental meetings.
Other Functions:
- Performs any other related duties or projects as assigned by Activity Supervisor.
- The health and safety of our residents, staff and visitors is important to us. All staff will follow best practices in infection control (as outlined in our Infection Control policies and procedures) and health and safety (as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and in Six Nations’ policies and procedures).
- Willingness to participate in facility and community emergency events.
- Provides support to the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Health Services.
- It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to client safety, staff safety and risk management.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The employee must expend physical activity and at times is required to work inside and outside the facility.
- The employee is required to have much interaction with residents’ and the public and requires the ability to take direction.

Represents and promotes the health service interests of Six Nations; works in a courteous, cooperative, positive proactive manner.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Minimum Requirements:
- A post-secondary diploma/degree in Recreation/Leisure, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology or other related field from a community college or university
- One years’ experience in long-term care, with understanding of Ministry of Health regulations and legislation
- Possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License (Class F is preferred and recommended)
Other Related Skills:
- Provide a current and clear security Police Check
- Willingness to obtain yearly flu shot and other Ministry immunizations as required and provide an up-to-date immunization record.
- Current Standard or Emergency First Aid and CPR Certification required or enrolled in the course within thirty (30) days from date of hire.
- Current Food Handlers Certification or enroll in the course within thirty (30) days from date of hire.
IMPACT OF ERROR:
Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss credibility, poor public relation, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to the Director of Health Services, Human Services Committee, Six Nations Elected Council, Government Agencies, and the public.
