Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Thurber is a specialized consulting firm with a focus on geotechnical engineering. Our project work includes transportation, large and small infrastructure, natural hazards, development and more. We undertake challenging assignments that can include steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, or other complications.
As our Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
- Project management of geotechnical projects;
- Conduct field drilling programs, construction monitoring or instrumentation programs relating to geotechnical and materials projects;
- Geotechnical analyses of stability, stress, deformation, and foundation response, utilizing a suite of software routines;
- Prepare and write proposals, fee estimates, and technical reports as directed by the Engineering or Branch Manager;
- Coordinate and conduct forensic and field investigation programs;
- Supervise the work of technologists and junior engineers and provide technical direction;
- Promote and assist Thurber in supporting the geotechnical practice, and managing client relationships, including business and new client development.
- Mentoring and development of junior staff; and,
- Progressive interaction with clients.
Qualifications and Assets
- 10 plus years of relevant experience in the Geotechnical Engineering field and an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering.
- Previous relevant experience working within Western Canada.
- A general understanding of Western Canadian geomorphology and associated landforms, processes, and hazards.
- The ability to conduct desktop and field level terrain assessments.
- Experience in the interpretation and utilization of aerial photographs as well as satellite and LiDAR imagery in the assessment of terrain and geohazards.
- Experience in the use of commercial analytical software packages in the assessment of slope stability.
- Familiarity with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring of geohazards.
- Eligibility for registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia.
- Class 5 driver’s license
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of rock and soil mechanics.
This is an intermediate career position and will be comprised of office activities with occasional field visits, with opportunities for continued career growth within the company.
