The Area Manager – Excess Soils is the owner of the Excess Soils business in Eastern Ontario & Montreal. They are responsible to ensure all soil import and rehabilitation projects run safely, smoothly and in compliance with all Lafarge and regulatory requirements. The Area Manager will have full ownership of the excess soil P&L in Eastern Ontario & Montreal, and will be responsible for revenue and profitability growth, environment and operational excellence, enforcing requirements at our sites, tracking project progress and communicating project status to the GM, as well as management of a team of 1 salary and 3+ hourly employees. Success in this role is measured by the P&L performance of the excess soil import sites, as well as demonstration of beneficial reuse and stakeholder satisfaction.
This role relies on a broad scope of competencies including:
project & contractor management;
risk & compliance management; and
customer value creation & accountability.
The Area Manager consistently contributes to ensure excellence in safety, production, regulatory compliance, sustainability, customer service and supplier/contractor relationship management.
Safety Culture: Promote safety culture through engagement with site employees, H&S Rep, and subcontractors with an objective of “zero” safety incidents. Administer, promote and review safety policies, processes and procedures to maintain relevance while ensuring the site meets or exceeds all company and regulatory guidelines. Assist in the implementation and management of all local and regional safety initiatives, providing feedback as necessary.
Financial Results: Responsible for achieving revenue (volume and price), cost & profitability objectives of Excess Soil importation in the EO & GMA markets.
Growth: Lead all initiatives related to the implementation of new soil offerings to the market. In addition, work with Land & Environmental groups to ensure we continue to grow our permitted excess soils capacity across our network of sites
Team Leadership: Lead a team including 4+ direct employees and six or more hourly employees to become market leaders in commercials, environmental and operational excellence.
Market Management: In conjunction with local sales representatives, identifies market opportunities in respective territory. Understands and communicates the scope of services and resources available in the market. Continuously monitors market activity, communicates and recommends any necessary actions.
Forecasting: Based on sales backlog and market intelligence, develops accurate forecasting and works in conjunction with P&S & local market GM to meet customer demand. Tracks and interprets market indicators (i.e. construction starts, building permits, housing sales) in order to understand key drivers of excess soil demand.
Segment Management: In conjunction with sales representatives, proactively tracks and manages construction activity in the territory. Understands excess soil offer and associated risk management requirements. Identifies and recommends opportunities. Identifies relevant issues that may affect service delivery. Understand Lafarge’s current operational readiness and continuously monitor the same.
Customer Value Creation: Identify and understand current and unmet needs for existing and potential customers related to the Circular Economy service offer.
Project & Contractor Management: Directs and coordinates rehabilitation project work with own team or contractors, with an emphasis on safety. Works with sales representatives to implement site service agreements with customer/contractors where appropriate.
Environmental Excellence: Prevent adverse effects by enforcing project compliance requirements and terms and conditions of sale with customers,
Administrative Responsibilities: Track and control customer activity and projects using C.E. tools provided. Generate reports as required for internal communication, customer management and for stakeholder engagement purposes
Community Relations: Ensure follow through on C.E. commitments made to community stakeholders.
Project-level management, monitoring, control and performance.
Safety leadership and continued development of Safety Culture.
Implementation and enforcement of site level operational controls.
Effective engagement of internal and external stakeholders.
Management of contractors.
Achieving volume, price and other territory-specific objectives.
Developing effective relationships with key customers.
Differentiating Lafarge from the competition.
Performing effective administration in order to ensure environmental compliance and “right-first-time” invoices.
Reports to the GM Products & Solutions
Works hand in hand with local GM
Works closely with local market Commercial, Operations, Territory & Plant Managers
Works Closely with various internal stakeholders This includes, but is not limited to Land, Environment, H&S
Work Environment and Travel:
This role requires working outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions
Frequent travel among customer sites, and our pits and quarries will be required.
Education & Work Experience:
An undergraduate degree in geosciences, engineering, business or significant industry experience.
Knowledge of the construction industry is an asset, but not essential.
Knowledge of waste management and environmental regulations is an asset, but not essential.
5-7 years of relevant work experience
Must be fluent in French & English
