Hoe Operator – Earthworks & Underground Utilities
We’re looking for an experienced Hoe Operator to join our Earthworks and Underground Utilities division. This role is ideal for a skilled operator who takes pride in precise excavation, pipe work, and supporting deep utility crews on civil and municipal projects across Calgary.

The Role
Reporting to the Site Foreman, you will operate excavators (hoes) on underground utility and earthworks projects. Your primary focus will be accurate excavation of mainline and service trenches, tie-ins, pipe handling, and supporting the crew to deliver high-quality municipal work.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete hazard assessments before starting work
- Perform daily preventative maintenance checks on equipment
- Excavate mainline and service trenches to grade
- Excavate tie-ins accurately and safely
- Crane and place pipe
- Operate a hoe packer as required
- Work collaboratively with ground crews and other operators
- Maintain productivity while prioritizing safety and quality
- Participate in daily toolbox talks and safety meetings
- Report any unsafe conditions or near misses immediately
Requirements
- Proven experience operating excavators/hoes on underground utility or civil projects
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment operations and site activities
- Ability to understand elevations and grading
- Underground water and sewer experience preferred
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to follow direction and communicate clearly
- Dedicated, reliable, and hard-working
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Valid Class 5 Operator’s Licence and clean driver’s abstract
- CSTS certification
- Active Ground Disturbance certification
- Active Confined Space certification
- Physically fit and able to work long hours, including evenings and weekends, during the season (April to December)
- CSA-approved safety boots required
