Job Description

The Waste Diversion Attendant III contributes to the health of residents and community of Strathcona County and other members of the public through performance of manual labour and the safe operations of a variety of self-propelled and small equipment. This position also trains and mentors staff in a variety of tasks and the operation of small equipment, makes on-site decisions and assigns or performs manual labour as required. The Waste Diversion Attendant III will support Corporate Values and works to achieve Department goals and initiatives.


Represent Strathcona County in a positive manner by acting responsibly and respectfully and working efficiently when providing services to the public and interacting with residents and team members
Provide responsible and accountable leadership to the team in completion of assignments on a day to day operational basis while meeting workload and safety requirements
Assist the supervisor with training staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment
Mentor, train and coach staff members to contribute to the development of a strong and effective team, support team members to be successful in their roles and gain knowledge and skills
Operate equipment involved in operations in a safe and efficient manner to meet established standards (i.e. compact wheel loader, forklift, yard waste shredder, electric hand tools, material compactors, etc.)
Assist and provide guidance for the setup, operation, safe handling, preparation and packing of household hazardous waste materials for transport by contract processors
Maintain Strathcona County’s urban and rural recycling stations
Collect and receive payment of fees from site users
Perform day-to-day monitoring, maintaining and servicing of equipment to ensure its in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards

Skills and Abilities

Team oriented with the ability to support and lead staff, contractors and volunteers
Excellent customer service skills to diffuse and resolve situations and enlist the attention and cooperation of site users
Willingness to learn and to adapt to new situations and demonstrate the ability to take initiative
Identify potentially hazardous situations and adapt behaviors according to a changing work environment
Strong organizational skills with the ability to self-prioritize tasks based on workload
Ability to identify and safely handle material left at recycle stations using operational policies and material handling information
Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulation and code and knowledge of OHS policies, procedures and guidelines
Ability to trouble shoot and resolve issues, manage expectations of residents and operational groups
Familiar with municipal residential electronics, paint and household hazardous waste collection is considered an asset


High School Diploma plus 3 years related experience
WHMIS and Standard First Aid is considered an asset
Experience with a forklift and/or a compact wheel loader is considered an asset

Conditions of Employment

Submission of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
Valid Alberta full, non-GDL Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time

This position works days, evenings and weekend shifts in all weather conditions.
