Overview
The Board of Directors plays a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction and governance of the organization. Directors are responsible for ensuring that the organization fulfills its mission while adhering to legal and ethical standards. This position requires a commitment to serving youth and sharing the gospel. Board members will collaborate with fellow directors to make informed decisions that impact the organization’s programs and services.
Duties
- Provide strategic oversight and direction for the organization’s mission and goals.
- Participate in program development initiatives
- Engage in relationship management with stakeholders, including community partners, staff, and families.
- Oversee financial health through budgeting and resource allocation to ensure sustainability.
- Participate in fundraising, donation and other revenue generating initiatives
- Utilize administrative experience to support organizational policies and procedures.
- Supervise program management efforts, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices.
- Attend regular board meetings and participate in committee work as needed.
Skills
Governance and Strategy
- Help develop and approve the organization’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan.
- Review and approve annual budgets, financial statements, and major policies.
- Monitor organizational performance against strategic goals and program outcomes.
- Ensure programs align with Christian faith-informed values and safe practices for youth.
Christian Faith and Board Culture
- Uphold the organization’s Christian ethos and model servant leadership, integrity, and accountability.
- Participate in prayer, discernment, or other faith-based practices as appropriate and agreed upon by the board.
- Community Representation and Advocacy
- Act as ambassadors for the organization in the community; build partnerships and increase visibility.
- Foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in board governance and program access.
Financial Stewardship and Fundraising
- Approve and monitor the annual budget; oversee internal controls and financial reporting.
- Actively participate in fundraising, donor stewardship, and community partnerships as able.
- Ensure sound financial practices and risk management.
Compliance, Risk Management, and Safeguarding
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, and ONCA 2010 Not for Profit Corporation guidelines
- Oversee risk management, insurance, and safeguarding/child-protection policies.
- Maintain confidentiality and manage conflicts of interest per policy.
Time Commitment
- Attend board Year-end, Annual General and Ad-Hoc meetings
- Participate in occasional events, fundraising activities, and program evaluations.
- Some weeks may require additional time for special initiatives, strategic planning, or crisis response.
Term and Commitment
- Term length: Two years, extendable for additional terms per bylaws
- Reappointment/rotation to maintain board renewal and balance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Christian faith and alignment with the organization’s mission and values.
- Commitment to youth development and safeguarding children.
- Demonstrated governance, financial literacy, fundraising, or nonprofit management experience (preferred).
- Relevant professional background (e.g., finance, legal, education, youth services, communications, church leadership) is a plus.
- Strong integrity, collaboration, leadership, and team-building skills.
- Willingness to dedicate the required time and resources; ability to pass background checks and safeguarding training.
- Ability to serve as an effective ambassador and advocate for the organization.
Mandatory Qualifications
- At least 18 years old.
- Not declared incapable under provincial law or any court with jurisdiction outside Canada.
- Not be in bankrupt status.
- Clean criminal record
- Must not have a history of being connected to an organization that has had its registered charity status revoked for a serious breach
