Full/Part-time: Full time ($25.00-$33.00 per hour)

Regular/Temporary: Temporary, 5-month term

This position is focused on honey bee inspection and surveillance activities throughout the province. It is integral to the implementation and enforcement of the Animal Health Act and the Bee Act and Regulations. It requires a multi-tasking individual capable of a mix of field and laboratory work. A strong beekeeping background with extensive knowledge of disease and pest management, honey bee biology, and seasonal management is essential. It also requires working directly with clients in the field, either with a team of people or individually. Travel throughout the province with overnight stays, up to 10 days, will be required.

Responsibilities and activities:

  • Organize, coordinate, and schedule beekeepers for inspection taking into consideration staff availability, resources, weather, operation size, and location
  • Supervise crew responsible for inspecting
  • Organize accommodations, field gear, and required supplies for inspection trips
  • Conduct honey bee colony inspections for numerous honey bee diseases and pests while adhering to provincial requirements and protocols
  • Assess management practices and provide recommendations for disease and pest management
  • Collect samples in the field and analyze in the field and laboratory, adhering to strict scientific protocols for diagnoses of honey bee diseases
  • Prepare inspection reports adhering to provincial requirements
  • Implement biosecurity practices for infected bee colonies as required
  • Collect and prepare honey samples for analysis

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive practical experience working with honey bees (+3 years beekeeping experience)
  • Strong understanding of bee biology, bee pests and diseases, disease management, and seasonal management of honey bee colonies
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work with clients and handle difficult issues
  • Knowledge of sampling bees for disease diagnosis in the laboratory
  • Availability for frequent out of town travel throughout the province, for durations between 1-10 days
  • Ability to conduct difficult physical work for extended hours while remaining professional with clients and coworkers
  • Must have a commitment to excellence and high standards
  • Strong organizational skills and oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift up to 20kg.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Valid First Aid – Level ‘C’ CPR certificate
