The UTSC Library is a leader in academic library service and program development. The library supports research and study by housing an extensive network of scholarly materials in many formats. The library offers an extensive reference and research service and holds a local collection of about 400,000 print items, journal subscriptions, sound recordings, videos and films, a leisure reading collection, special research and archival collections. The library’s collections are complemented by our services and professional staff of librarians and technicians that support the daily operation of a library that is committed to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion to help create a truly rich and engaging academic experience.
As the Reference and Acquisitions Support Technician, you will act as the first point of contact for general enquiries at the information desk where you will offer both circulation and reference services.
You will participate in circulation activities by retrieving, compiling and filing borrowing and lending requests; searching catalogue records for material availability; and providing detailed information to users regarding library rules, guidelines and procedures. In addition, you will participate in the delivery of reference services by performing reference search activities; determining the suitability of resources and reference material; and collating and organizing data for various reports.
In this role, you will also participate in the acquisition and process of materials for collections by preparing purchase orders; tracking the status of acquisitions; searching records for requested material; and creating and updating catalogue records. Other duties include the processing of serials (e.g., verifying that serials licenses have been updated), providing library operations support (e.g., troubleshooting routine hardware/software issues), and providing guidance and/or direction (e.g., directing the activities of casual staff).
Your responsibilities will include:
Acting as the first point of contact for general enquiries
Responding to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirecting as appropriate
Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures on the appropriate use and selection of reference resources
Performing reference search activities
Coordinating selection and acquisitioning processes with external vendors
Verifying that records are linked to correct bibliographic and electronic resources
Matching delivered goods to orders and returning incorrect or defective orders to the supplier
Keeping well-informed on applicable copyright, access and privacy laws
Library Technician College Diploma (2 years) or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum four (4) years of related library experience working in a public services department and/or technical services unit
Must have experience with library management systems
Must have strong, proactive communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact, and good judgment
Ability to work as a positive team member, contribute to the team by being flexible and reliable, and the ability to work independently
Must have excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Must have excellent customer service skills and commitment to service excellence
Sound organizational, time management and problem-solving skills
Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
Experience in an academic library

Please note that this is a term (one-year), part-time (60%) position. The hours of work are Monday to Wednesday from 8:45 AM to 5:00 PM.

USW Pay Band 09 - $58,824 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $75,227. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
