Stantec is seeking a Junior Geotechnical/Geological Engineer to join our team in the Dartmouth, NS office.
The primary role of a junior geotechnical/geological engineer is to work on projects in a supporting capacity as part of a project team and under the guidance and supervision of a professional engineer. A junior engineer will perform a variety of tasks which will include working independently in the field and providing support in development of proposals and technical reports and engineering and financial calculations. The projects that a junior geotechnical/geological engineer may be assigned to may be broad, varied and diverse in scope.
Work assignments will initially be focused on obtaining hands-on experience in site investigations and field and laboratory data collection following accepted standards that will be used to guide engineering recommendations and design. Office-based tasks may include technical data compilation / assessment / validation, technical report writing, and engineering calculations.
Your Key Responsibilities
Working on a variety of small to large geotechnical projects spanning from transportation, power, mining, residential, commercial, and industrial developments.
Conduct field work and testing which may include borehole drilling, test pit supervision, construction site review, laboratory testing, rock anchor testing, slope stability assessments (rock and soil), and installation of instrumentation.
Assisting intermediate and senior engineers with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.
Support engineering and design of geotechnical systems including, foundation design, slope stability, dams, rockfall hazard analysis, soil improvement, and others.
Support preparation of project technical specifications and construction documents.
Preparation of proposals and geotechnical reports.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Basic understanding of general concepts of relevant areas of geotechnical /geological engineering.
Basic understanding of applied geology and environmental sciences.
Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite is required; proficiency in engineering applications such as GeoStudio and/or Rocscience software packages is considered an asset.
Developing cooperative skills in working efficiently within a team.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Field work is a large component of the duties as a junior geotechnical/geological engineer and a valid driver’s license and availability of personal transportation is essential.
Education and Experience
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering from a recognized university; a post graduate degree would be an asset. This is an entry level role; previous work experience is not necessary but is considered an asset. Co-op/Internship experience with a geotechnical / geological engineering consultant is preferred.
Field work may involve traversing difficult terrain and include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Other work will be carried out in a typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
