(Summer Experience Program – Full-time 30-day work term)

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in conjunction with the Summer Experience Program sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, is seeking four (4) well-motivated students to work on a full-time basis (must be available for evening, weekend, and holiday shifts) to provide responsible, friendly and resourceful assistance to Museum visitors in any of the three Hands-On Galleries.

The ROM’s Biodiversity & Schad Galleries introduce Museum visitors to the amazing variety and natural interdependence of plants and animals. These galleries are based upon the ROM’s extensive collections and research. The ROM’s Discovery Gallery is a hands-on mini museum filled with objects from the Museum’s vast natural history and world cultures collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervised by the Gallery Coordinator and under the direction of the Manager (Learning) you will:

Provide assistance to museum visitors by engaging visitors in an interactive gallery environment and guiding them through a learning process.
Ensure safety of specimens and objects and enforce gallery rules
Provide general administrative assistance in gallery offices (e.g. photocopying, arranging schedules, inventory and answering phones).
Assist with gallery operations (set up multi-media technologies, development of resources, replenish supplies, ensure proper cleaning procedures are followed)
Work with gallery collections to ensure proper cataloguing of museum objects and specimens.
Provide leadership to the volunteer team
Assist with additional programming in the Museum.
Perform related duties as required
Summer Projects

Assist with entering artifacts/specimens into the handling collection databases.
Research artifacts and specimens to create information sheets.

Qualifications
Experience working with the public, particularly with children
Computer skills and familiarity with MS Office
A proven work record of being responsible and reliable
The skills necessary to work well both independently and as part of a team
Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
The student hired must meet the eligibility criteria of the SEP:

all students must be currently enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution or within 6 months of graduation and have reached the age of 15 and not yet reached the age of 25 upon commencement of employment, or up to 29 years for persons with a disability, if disabled, within the meaning of s.10 of the Ontario Human Rights Code;
students must be available to be employed full time for 6 weeks at 7.25 hours per day;
proof of student enrolment must be provided at the time of employment;
Students must be residents of Ontario during the period of employment;
Students must be eligible to work in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
Note: the student must be living in Ontario at the time they start work. The intention of the program is to provide career related experience to eligible students that are also eligible to work in Ontario

How to Apply
STARTING DATE: varies based on schedule

SALARY: $14.00 per hour (in accordance with the SEP guidelines)

HOURS OF WORK: 36.25 hours/week (six week contract between June 26th and September 2nd, including weekends & holidays)
