Schedule: Full-Time | Three 12-hour shifts per week
Compensation: $19–$26/hour + $3/hour Shift Premium
Maritime Veterinary Emergency + Specialty Centre (MVESC) is hiring a full-time Veterinary Assistant, Emergency to join our growing Emergency & Specialty animal hospital in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This role is ideal for a compassionate, motivated team member who wants to support advanced veterinary medicine while helping pets and families during critical moments.
As an Emergency Veterinary Assistant at MVESC, you’ll work alongside veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in a fast-paced environment while developing your skills in patient care, client communication, and emergency medicine.
Compensation-
$19–$26/hour based on skill level and assessment

Weekday premium shifts: 7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.

Weekend premium shifts: Friday 7:00 p.m. – Monday 7:00 a.m.

Responsibilities
As an Emergency Veterinary Assistant, you’ll support patient care, hospital operations, and the veterinary team while helping deliver an exceptional experience for pets and their families.

Assist veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians with patient care and daily treatments
-
Support diagnostic procedures, radiographs, and IV setups
-
Collect samples and assist with operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment
-
Provide compassionate animal handling and restraint for patients with various needs and temperaments
-
Assist with patient care needs including cleaning, walking, feeding, and comfort measures
-
Help maintain accurate client and patient records, estimates, and billing information
-
Demonstrate calm, organized support during emergency situations
-
Assist with client communication including phone calls, patient updates, and check-ins
-
Help present estimates and process payments when needed

Maintain a clean and welcoming hospital environment, including kennels, treatment areas, and exam rooms

Participate in team rounds to support continuity of patient care

Provide excellent customer service with empathy and professionalism

Contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture
Qualifications-
Previous veterinary hospital experience preferred

Emergency veterinary experience is an asset

Passion for providing compassionate patient care and client support

Comfortable handling dogs and cats of various sizes, conditions, and temperaments

Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
-
Ability to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced emergency animal hospital environment

Willingness to learn and grow within emergency and specialty veterinary medicine

Positive attitude with a collaborative, team-focused approach
-
Fluent English speaking and reading skills required
