Pay Scale: $60,752 to $75,930 per annum (Commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN Compensation Policy)
Hours: 35 hours per week
Status: Permanent Full-time

University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Scientific Associate I in our Research Department.

University Health Network (UHN) is a research hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto and a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. The Scientific Associate I will primarily be involved in laboratory studies of new cancer treatments with a high potential for translation to the clinic. This will require advanced knowledge of laboratory-based research methods, including but not limited to tissue culture, western blotting, RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry. Prior experience with animal experiments in mice is essential. The Scientific Associate will be expected to oversee the running of the lab, including ensuring accurate recording of experimental data; maintaining lab inventories of biological/chemical agents, supplies, animals and/or equipment; maintaining records of safety training and other health and safety paperwork.
The Scientific Associate will have excellent competency in written and verbal communications and be expected to assist with manuscripts and grant applications. The ability to work with people from different disciplines and with varying levels of scientific and technical expertise is required.

Qualifications:
A PhD in the biological sciences
At a minimum, one (1) year of related biomedical laboratory research experience
Strong background and relevant experience handling mice and conducting animal experiments, including basic animal surgical procedures (injection techniques, tissue excisions, blood collection)
Excellence in 2D mammalian cell culture and bioassays (Western blotting, RT-qPCR, immunohistochemistry)
Knowledge in bioinformatics preferred
Excellent problem recognition and problem-solving
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to set priorities and work independently with accuracy in a fast-paced multitasking environment
Strong proficiency with MS Office software, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

Key Duties:
Apply advanced scientific research knowledge and advise on new research direction and study design
Ensure the smooth daily operation of the research lab
Oversee the implementation of new laboratory techniques and technical developments
Oversee other lab personnel
Train staff and students on established and new procedures
Perform data analysis and interpretation, which may involve biostatistical and bioinformatic approaches
Assist with the preparation of manuscripts and grant applications

At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall mission of the program. There is a strong clinical collaboration including patient data analysis and sample collection. The applicant will be expected to participate in the establishment of patient derived tumor models which are a unique asset to our laboratory research group.
