The opportunity:
The University of Manitoba is looking for a Supervisor, Capital Accounting. Reporting to the Manager, Capital Accounting, this position will be responsible for the supervision of staffs and the oversight of the team’s responsibilities which include capital budgeting, accounting, forecasting, reporting and financial oversight.
The Supervisor, Capital Accounting will also be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the University’s general ledger as it relates to capital-related items and capital assets, conducting ongoing oversight of the budget through the monitoring of financial results.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
- An undergraduate degree is a related discipline is required. A major in Accounting or Finance is preferred.
- Must have a Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) designation and remain in good standing.
- Four years of directly-related experience in budgeting, accounting, conducting complex financial analyses, forecasting, and financial reporting is required.
- At least three years of post CPA designation experience preferred.
- Several years of capital or construction accounting is preferred.
- Experience with budget analysis, reviewing, and providing recommendations on budgets is required.
- Experience in identifying financial reporting needs and developing financial reporting to meet the needs of stakeholders is required.
- Experience with interpreting policies, agreements and guidelines, conducting oversight and monitoring compliance with such, and the implementation of internal controls, system enhancements and processes to support this is required.
- Experience communicating financial information to non-financial staff and faculty is required.
- Experience advising on financial best practices, policies and procedures is required.
- Experience working in a complex, computerized accounting environment is required.
- Experience calculating asset retirement obligations is preferred.
- Supervisory experience is preferred.
- Experience conducting financial and system training is preferred.
- Experience with policy development and accounting standard implementation is preferred.
- Experience in a University environment would be an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Advanced proficiency in the use of the Microsoft 365 is required.
- Must be able to communicate effectively (both orally and written) with all levels of staff and public in a diplomatic, firm but tactual manner is required.
- Must be skilled in the analysis of budget, financial, and system information.
- Must be able to organize own's workload and that of the team and team's ensuring tasks are completed in a timely manner.
- Ability to prepare and review complex financial information with attention to detail and accuracy is required.
- Must have the ability to process large numbers of documents with speed, accuracy to meet strict deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service is required.
- Ability to adapt to and implement change is essential.
- A sound knowledge of University policy and procedures is preferred.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
