Position Summary:
Working closely with the business development and pre-construction teams, the Senior Estimator will be responsible to prepare and interpret tender documents and specifications and provide full-cost estimates for commercial/industrial based projects including conceptual, design-build, construction management/Lump-Sum or general tender work. This position will assist the estimating group in sub trade management and ensures all estimates/budgets have sub trade coverage. As the Senior Estimator, this position may oversee day to day activities of more junior staff and provide support and guidance over the estimating process. Accuracy is critical to the profitability of the business, as under-estimates may cause significant financial losses and over-estimates may result in the inability to win bids.
Key Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Attend project estimate start up meetings to discuss and determine effective bid strategy for project
- Assist project management teams to determine what types of projects to bid on and develop strategies for complex bid submissions
- Act as a liaison with external consultants and clients to review drawings, specifications and design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials.
- Identify critical sections in the tender documents and assist in securing information
- Ensure all addendums and scope changes are identified and sent to appropriate trades
- Review all final estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness, prior to formal quotation.
- Organize bid closing assignments to meet submission deadlines on closing day
- Participate in tender reviews, evaluation and tender close processes
- Preparation and delivery of tender documents to appropriate consultants
- Participate in presentations to management and clients as required.
- Assign and oversee work of estimating staff on bid preparation
- Provide guidance and support to junior staff
- Participate in tender post mortem review
- Provide information and guidance to Project management staff during contract turnover and participate in project start up meetings
- Provide technical assistance to project teams when negotiating contracts, change orders, etc.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Completion of post-secondary education with a diploma or degree related to construction management, estimating, engineering or related education
- 7+ years’ commercial/industrial estimating experience with extensive knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take off procedures, sub trade procurement, pricing and bid closing procedures
- 3+ years in a team lead or progressively more responsible role within estimating
- Experience in estimating for lump sum, design-build and construction management tenders
- Designation in CET, PQS or Goldseal Estimator is preferred
- Proficient with estimating and scheduling software, including Onscreen takeoff and Microsoft Project as well as MS Office Suite
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills necessary to do material and labour estimates and interpret job cost reports.
- Knowledge of Alberta’s Building Codes, Municipal zoning and land use bylaws and permitting procedures and ability to read and interpret building specifications, blueprints and as-builds.
- Ability to establish strong working relationships and communicate effectively with clients, consultants and subcontractors
- Ability to build an estimate without drawing specifications
- Strong organizational skills utilizing well-developed time management techniques to meet commitments
- Ability to identify risks associated with contract/project documents, adapt and respond to changing needs and effectively troubleshoot and resolve issues as they arise
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide more junior staff
- Committed to providing strong customer service both internally and externally
- Flexibility in working periods of overtime and travel to sites on occasion
- Demonstrated commitment and adherence to safety practices
- Proactive in ensuring job knowledge is current.
Work Environment and Schedule
This role operates in a construction project environment and includes a combination of office-based project management, site visits, client meetings, trade coordination, and team leadership. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced construction setting with competing priorities, changing project conditions, and active job sites.
Flexibility to work overtime during peak project periods and travel to project sites on occasion is required.
