The Opportunity
Our House Youth Wellness Centre is looking for a committed, innovative, adaptable, and resilient SVP Youth Outreach Worker, who can provide both group programming and individual support to young people with complex backgrounds and needs. We need someone with an unwavering determination to make a difference and meet the flexible and varied work environment of a non-profit.
The Sexual Violence Prevention Youth Outreach Program is a community-based program designed to improve the immediate and long-term social, economic, educational and health outcomes for vulnerable youth between the ages of 12 and 19 who are at risk of sexual violence/exploitation through mentorship and by assisting them to access services and supports.
Responsibilities include
- Planning and coordinating outreach activities that are intended to identify, capture the attention and interest of, and foster involvement of marginalized and vulnerable youth (and their families) including, but not limited to; eliciting, receiving and sharing information about their interests, concerns and needs.
- Providing information regarding relevant programs, services and opportunities.
- Guiding and facilitating access to programs, services and opportunities that may be of assistance or responsive to articulated needs and requests.
- Enabling positive civic participation in their neighborhood/community.
- Providing direct services and support to youth as needed.
- Helping youth and their support systems set and achieve life goals.
- Developing linkages and maintaining effective working relationships with other community services/agencies to facilitate contacts and services for youth.
- Social Media content development as related to your programming outcomes.
- Carryout administrative work by recording information from shift (ie. recording incidents, making notes of supplies needed, recording phone messages, data tracking for youth participants, etc)
- Attend appropriate and relevant training as directed by Executive Director or Board of Directors
- Any addition tasks as deemed necessary
Qualifications and Skills
- High School diploma
- Post-secondary education in social sciences is an asset (Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Human Services, Recreation, etc.)
- Experiences in working with youth in a community-based setting; personal life experiences are a definite asset
- Knowledge and understanding of the continuum of sexual violence and how factors such as racism and poverty impact and contribute to this issue
- Comfortable with and experienced in responding to disclosures of sexual violence
- Knowledge and understanding of harm reduction and trauma-informed support
- Knowledge and understanding of youth development
- Knowledge and understanding of family, community, social and historical factors and its impact on youth development
- Knowledge and experience in motivational interviewing
- Knowledge of youth/family/community resources, programs and services within the community and within Nova Scotia
- Knowledge, understanding and experience in working with culturally and socially diverse Youth
- Demonstration of experience in working from a strengths-based and relationship-based perspective
- Creative, adventurous and a demonstration of knowledge, understanding of community and trends pertaining to youth
- Demonstrates a passion for working with youth, specifically in supporting youth who may be facing multiple and complex challenges
- Ability to lead programming while managing the dynamics and behaviours of youth participants
- Awareness of activities, topics and events that are interesting to youth
- Experience working in a group setting, delivering workshops, leading physical activity sessions, games and activities that engage participants in a welcoming and accessible manner
- Demonstrated ability to develop good rapport with youth
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work positively with groups & individuals
- Demonstrated effective time management skills
- Genuine interest in working with youth of diverse backgrounds
- The ability to multitask
